Coupe Week: 1987 BMW 635CSi

If there was one song that summed up the 1980s for me, it was Opportunities by the Pet Shop Boys. “I’ve got the brains, you’ve got the looks…let’s make lots of money.” Economic liberalism was on the move during this decade and as a result, consumers were hungry for vehicles to showcase their new found wealth. German vehicles would quickly become objects of desire, noted for their quality. The Porsche 911 wasn’t a new design by any means, but it would be the standard bearer for sports car excellence. The Mercedes-Benz S-class and SL roadster would be for the folks looking to capture a bit of that old money look and the pinnacle of luxury. Then we have the BMW E24 6 series. What about this coupe, then? I’ve always considered the 6 series the thinking man’s luxury car. It combined performance you’d expect from a Porsche with understated luxury you got in a Mercedes-Benz. It wasn’t the obvious choice, but time has been kind to the E24, as it is steadily becoming more and more popular with collectors. This 635CSi for sale in Vancouver, British Columbia is a US market car with just over 70,000 miles on the clock.

1986 Porsche 930 Coupe

Last week we showed a car very similar to this one, which perhaps was not quite in the condition I would have hoped. I was curious about the low bidding and, as these things typically go, there may have been good reasons for that low bidding. So we’ll try again with another Guards Red 1986 Porsche 930 Coupe, this one located in Connecticut. Like the other car this one too features Tan leather seating, which is easily my favorite look on a Guards Red 911. The contrast is simply wonderful and I have a strong preference for these over the more common all-Black interior. With sports seats and only 44,583 miles on it there’s certainly a lot to like about this particular 930 and it presents very well both inside and out. Even though we feature them quite regularly I still enjoy coming across these and am consistently struck by the way the well-appointed interior tends to belie the aggressive stance of the exterior. There is a monster lurking here that provides ample rewards to focused drivers.

1979 BMW 520 Dinan 3.9

An interesting conversation erupted in Andrew’s post about the 2003 BMW 540i M-Sport yesterday. Andrew suggested that the E39 was not only the best looking 5-series, but perhaps the best looking sedan ever produced. I think for many that opinion will depend on the generation that they grew up in; for example, I bet you could find some folks who would contend that the early fourth generation Lincoln Continental (early 60s) or even the Bugatti Royale was better looking. But taking a break from arguing the best looking ever, how about within the 5-series? There are a lot of E28 fans out there, our own author Nate being one since he owns a M5. I grew up with a ’88 M5 in the family, too – but for me the E28, while a definitive and landmark step for BMW, was not as “pretty” as the E12 which preceded it. That’s especially true of the early E12s, but in terms of motivation there aren’t many that can match the punch of the later M5 and 540i models. To solve that problem, one owner took the pretty look of a 1979 Euro-market 520i but ditched the M20 inline-6, replacing it with a Dinan built 3.9 M30 with accompanying upgrades. The result is certainly impressive:

1978 BMW 733i 4-speed manual

There’s a website How Many Left? that tracks the number of examples of any particular vehicle still on the road in Great Britain. If their numbers are accurate, then the BMW 733i is almost extinct. I can’t remember the last time I spotted an E23 on the road, let alone an early 733i. These early 7 series are not a darling of the collector set. Around 285,000 were produced over a decade span. I’ve seen plenty of E23s in rough condition and if that’s anything to go on, then many have taken their final trip to the scrap heap. This 1977 733i for sale in Vancouver, British Columbia, however, has escaped that fate.

1978 Porsche 928

Captain Clean (aka Andy McCulley) from flüssig magazine is back with an early Porsche 928 5-speed manual in a rather unique color.

Here we have a beautiful Cashmere on Cork (beige on beige) 1978 Porsche 928 with a 5-speed manual. I’d love to meet the person who walked into a Porsche dealer back in 1978, saw a nice red or black 928 and said “I like that car, I’ll take a beige one.” Joking aside, I have to say that I love the color on this nice example. It exemplifies the trends of the late ‘70’s. In fact, the only thing missing is a nice set of pascha seats and door inserts.

This particular car appears to be a pretty decent example. I have noticed a few imperfections that are not unordinary on a 37 year-old car. There appears to be at least one crack in the dashboard, there is some leather shrinkage on the front seats, the carpet has seen better days, the wheels seem to need refinishing, the gasket surrounding the lock on the rear hatch doesn’t appear to be a factory original piece, the anodizing on the rear window trim has mostly worn off, the illustrations on the window switches have worn off, and the jump post cover is missing. In addition, there appear to be covers of some sort on the interior door pulls and armrests/door card container covers. While this may seem like a long list, these are pretty minor imperfections given the age of the car. The door vents don’t match the center air vents, but you’ll find this on many ’78s. Earlier builds had door vents similar to the center vent. This is evident in the 1978 owner’s manual and brochures. A switchover occurred in mid production to the “later” style door vents seen on this example and much later these “early” center vents were phased out and replaced with “later” style vents that would match the door vent design seen here.
