1956 Volkswagen Beetle

Last week we looked at a variety of vintage, air-cooled Volkswagens, with one very important model conspicuously missing from the lineup: the Beetle. We’ll make up for lost time this Monday with this 1956 Oval Window Beetle for sale in Michigan. This brightly colored example is sporting a twin carbureted 1800 cc engine and a 12 volt electric system conversion, sitting on chrome wheels with Porsche style hubcaps. With some period correct details, this People’s Car pulls off a very rich look with a price to match.

Motorsports Monday: 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe

Over the past few decades, the classic car market has been so crazy in some cases that former race cars have been reverted expensively back to street models in order to capitalize on their greater value. Factory race cars obviously retain their appeal – sometimes even if they were never raced – yet cars that were converted by your average enthusiast retain the prospect of a return to their former street-worthy status. One of the most popular cars to convert to track use has traditionally been the Porsche 911, a car that since it’s inception was a gentleman racer in the making. But with values in a shocking climb, will we see these 911s leave their ancestral home at the track and head for climate-controlled garages with heavy specialty insurance premiums?

1993 Audi S4

We’ve recently had some lively discussion regarding what makes a “good” or “average” condition C4 Audi. Long the under-appreciated super sedan, it was only a select few who owned or had owned these cars that really valued them. As with the E28 and E34 M5 and E500, though, a greater appreciation for what was arguably one of Audi’s best-ever products has recently driven value up on the market. This means that some good examples have come up to market – but pricing is sometimes all over the map. We’ve seen $12,000 non-original S6s that compare to equal condition $3,000 S4s; where does the market truly lie on these cars?

1966 Porsche 912 Karmann Coupe

I am a big fan of variety and selection when it comes to car color. As such, I really enjoy coming across variants I haven’t seen before. While I have always been aware that Sand Beige existed and was available on older Porsches, I cannot recall actually coming across one. Now, I will say, Sand Beige isn’t an exciting color. This doesn’t make me take notice in the way a Blood Orange 911S or Riviera Blue GT2 does. It isn’t electric, but it is different and I still enjoy taking in any color simply so as to understand the nuances of the shade and the subtle distinctions that distinguish it from standard colors available at the time. Here we see it on an early short wheel-base 1966 Porsche 912, located in Ohio, with a nice Tan interior and 70,160 miles on it.

Wagon Week: 1995 BMW 530i Touring

Yesterday I wrote up a very clean ’94 525i Touring for sale here in California with only 76,000 miles on the clock. Right after I save that piece I ran another search for E34 wagons and came across this example for sale in Waco, Texas. Though it is the same color, it differs in a number of ways from the first car and I thought it would make for an interesting would you rather sort of question to round out my Wagon Week posts.

More often than not I have trouble deciding between two cars that are very similar vs. ones that are very different. Throughout the course of my recent car shopping adventures I’ve looked at everything from the new M235i to a 911 SC Targa, the latter mostly just out of pure curiosity, lord knows I can’t afford one. However now that I’ve narrowed my search down to 5 different cars, all from the same manufacturer and all sharing design traits, I’m finding it even more difficult to make a decision. I think choosing between an old Porsche and a new BMW would have been far easier than choosing either an E34 or E39 5 Series. Harder still would be to choose between the car you see here and the 525i Touring I posted yesterday.
