2012 Mercedes Benz E63 AMG Estate

There are few offerings from Mercedes-Benz in the past decade or so, that interest me as much as the E63 AMG Estate. The SLS, C63 AMG, and because I have a soft spot for ridiculous things, the G55 AMG, are the only vehicles to wear the three pointed star that I’d actually want to own. The S550 is a modern marvel, but at the end of the day, I’m an A8 W12 guy. I’ll pass on the S-Class.

Mercedes’ powerful long roof is another story though. Where as Audi abandoned selling any sort of fast wagon back in 2008, Mercedes has hung in there, never leaving us without the option of a grocery getter that will leave sports cars in its dust. While I do prefer the look of the current E-Class, there’s something special about the slatted grille on this 2012. It adds an extra bit of prestige to the car, which further adds to its sleepiness, and covert craziness is what this car is all about. As far as performance daily drivers go, there isn’t anything that comes close to the E63 Estate. It doesn’t have any direct competition in the United States, not in its class anyway. Super SUVs like the Grand Cherokee SRT8, or cars like the S7, and Porsche Panamera GTS, are the kind of vehicles one might cross shop when looking at one of these, but none of them are as dynamic as the E63. One minute you’re dropping the kids off at private school, the next you’re getting a latte, and maybe after that you head to the drag strip to rattle off 12.2 quarter miles times. Blame all that caffeine for making you want to run the car at full tilt, but you know deep down that you just want to play with your toy, and who wouldn’t?!

Low Mileage 1980 Volkswagen Rabbit L – REVISIT

1997 BMW M3

While the BMW E30 M3 is experiencing epic levels of popularity, for yours truly, it’s not my favorite of the lot. No, my favorite would be the E36 M3. I’ve always had a thing for this car, even if it’s heart was based on the M50 inline-6 found in lesser E36 models. There is something about the crisp lines of the E36 that grabs my attention, as the E46 which followed was a bit softer in appearance. Today, we no longer have a two-door M3. Instead, we’ve moved up a number to the M4. Even though it’s “technically” an M3, I’m not too keen on driving a car with the same name as a motorway in the United Kingdom. So let’s take a look at this 1997 M3 for sale in Illinois. Finished in Estoril Blue, this one has yet to cross the 70,000 mile mark.

1989 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia

The last Westy I posted was an exercise in extremes. Every mod imaginable and a 1.8T engine swap led to the van selling for the best offer, obviously less than the $110k asking price but probably not by that much. Today I present a counterpoint, a late-model, all-stock Westy with fewer than 50k miles. Silver on gray and about as close as possible to what you found on a VW showroom floor in 1989, this is a van that can keep chugging away for at least another 25 years and probably more. No racks, no lights, and no lift kit, yet it’s just as attractive.

1989 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa

Final model years have their own particular appeal, perhaps garnering an extra dose of nostalgic reverence over the earlier model years, and as such with all else being equal almost always command the most value. Of the years during which the Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera was produced it is the final three model years that capture the most attention, given Porsche’s introduction of the G50 5-speed manual transmission in 1987, but cars from the model’s final year, 1989, continue that trend of showing slightly elevated values compared with the rest. 1989 itself marked a significant turning point for the 911 as it would finally see a significant reworking of the exterior design it had possessed since 1974. Furthermore, that design transition came after the success of the 911SC and 3.2 Carrera had cemented the 911’s place in the Porsche lineup. The time had finally come to retire an icon – or at least give an icon a significant facelift. For fans of the classic 911 style that makes 911s from the 1989MY highly prized as the final rendition we would see and the most refined of the breed. The example we have here is a very pretty Velvet Red Metallic 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa, located in Cleveland, with a Burgundy interior and 87,950 miles on it.
