Long overshadowed by both the E28 and E39, I think the E34 version of the M5 is in fact one of the last definitive M-cars, and is certainly worthy of the kind of attention that it now seems to be getting among M-enthuasiasts (especially those priced out of the E30 market). On the outside it’s modern but understated, a little conservative even, with only a few external features distinguishing it from an ordinary ’90s 5-series. But underneath that utilitarian exterior lies a screamer of a straight six engine, the S38, which has a lineage traceable to the race-bred motor in the iconic M1. While production of this generation M5 ran from 1989 to 1995, cars outside of the US received a revised version of the motor in 1991. The new unit bumped capacity from 3.6 to 3.8 liters and pushed power output from 311 to 335 hp. This particular car is a European-spec example equipped with that larger 3.8 liter motor. It also comes in a rather fetching color.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve covered pretty much the range of SL products from the awesome 300SL Roadster Andrew found through yesterday’s Mineral Green R129 500SL. When it comes to the R107 model, the second longest production cycle for Mercedes-Benz (only outdone by the stone-age G), generally we spend most of our time looking at the more prevalent and popular 560 models. Seemingly synonymous with the 1980s, Signal Red SLs are often flanked by black and white models. But let’s not forget that the R107 was a child of the 1970s, and when you head back to the beginning of the production cycle the colors become fittingly bell-bottomed. Suddenly, the red, black and whites are replaced by cream, browns, and greens – and while the colors can really date the chassis, occasionally they look pretty spectacular. Such is the case with today’s unique U.S. specification 450SL from 1973, only the second year of R107 production. Presented in DB-860 Green with green MB Tex and dash, the only thing missing is Carly Simon’s “You’re so vain” playing in the background:

1 CommentI don’t normally revisit a car this quickly, but since I’ve pretty much decided I love this 911 I’m going to break with protocol. The Aubergine 1973 Porsche 911T Coupe is still for sale and the seller has now made his ask clear rather than wait out a reserve auction. Given that bidding in the previous auction only reached $58,783, asking $100K is a substantial leap. Perhaps the seller simply needs the right buyer to come along. It’s certainly a lot for a 911T, but showcasing one of the best colors from its era certainly helps it.

Comments closedEvery now and then, I spot a black W124 Mercedes-Benz E320 Cabriolet tooling around the neighborhood. These days, this is a car that sticks out. It doesn’t necessarily look vintage, but has a crisp, stately appearance that is sadly lacking in most new vehicles these days. As we move further towards vehicles with all kinds of computer assistance and, dare I say it, self-driving cars, it’s nice to look back two decades and find a car like this with classic style mixed in with modern convenience. This 1995 E320 Cabriolet for sale in New York represents the final year for the W124 and this one is mint, showing almost 30,000 miles on the odometer.

6 CommentsAs part of its sendoff of the outgoing 991 Porsche has turned to what it knows best: special editions. Inspiration this time did not come from the celebration of a production milestone or anything of that sort, but rather a celebration of some of Porsche’s biggest, and longest-tenured, fans. The Rennsport Reunion. As a Porsche-sanctioned event featuring some of the most prestigious models in Porsche’s history and with the express intention of using those cars on the track – rather than just having them seen – the Rennsport Reunion serves as a fitting showcase of the marque’s motorsport pedigree. To celebrate it makes much sense. The resulting special edition began with the Carrera GTS and its 430 hp being delivered only to the rear wheels, mandates that it come equipped with a manual transmission, and then throws on a number of cosmetic enhancements to help separate it from the rest of the GTS herd. To make it even more special, they only built 25.
