Chances are if you live in the United States, a Mercedes-Benz B200 is something you only might of seen in the background of that weird French movie that your significant other made you watch on Netflix. And chances are you only caught a glimpse because ”We aren’t stopping the movie again so you can go back and look at a car”. So what is the B200? Mercedes calls it a ”sports compact tourer”, the Euro NCAP calls it a ”small multi-purpose vehicle” and I just call it a tall, skinny, four door hatchback . This front-wheel drive 2009 B200 is powered by an engine the size of a case of beer and actually gets over 40mpg when paired to the 5-speed manual gearbox. So let’s take a look at this illegal immigrant located in New York.

Following upon the heels of yesterday’s Porsche 930 here we have a very similar looking 1979 Porsche 911SC Targa, located in Virginia. Both cars came from the 1979 MY and both have the same rare exterior color. But the devil is in the details as this SC departs from that 930 in a few interesting ways – you know, other than them being completely different models. The most obvious point of departure comes in the interior where we find pasha inserts on the seats. Like the many tartan inserts we’ve seen on other Porsches from this period the pasha inserts can be tough to love and pretty clearly date this 911 to the ’70s. For some buyers though they are just the thing to spice up the interior. We also find the cookie cutter wheels, here shown in black, a color which I’ve very rarely seen and which gives them a very subtle appearance. It also has one of the earlier whale tails for the SC and it looks much more like that of the early 930s than what we would late find on other 911s. Some documentation of its originality to this 911 will be key here.

2 CommentsI’ve posted a number of W126 sedans over the past few weeks, making no secret of my love for the 80s era S-class. But no less desirable, in my view, is the two-door variant based on the same platform, the C126. These cars offered all the luxury and advanced (for the time) safety features of the sedans, not to mention their elegant and timeless styling, but with the added panache of a sexy, low-slung, pillar-less coupe. As with their four door counterparts, used prices for these cars are a little all over the map these days. This ’90 560SEC is a middle of the market example that appears to be in turn-key condition.

Yesterday Paul wrote up a 530i Sport noting that for many, the styling of the E39 5-series is vastly preferable to the E60 that came afterward, burdened as it is with awkward creases and controversial styling courtesy of BMW design guru Chris Bangle. I tend to agree, although I also think the E60, especially in sport specification, will probably become better appreciated as it ages. While yesterday’s 530i with an autobox represents, as Paul put it, the “bread and butter” of the range, this particular car is a bit more special. The standard 540i, powered by a torquey 4.4 liter V8 making nearly 300 hp, is already a very capable sport sedan in its own right. The M-sport package however, which adds M-sport exterior styling, suspension and wheels, brings the car within firing range of the M5.

3 CommentsA funny little aside to open this post: when this 930 first came up on eBay the mileage was listed at 590,031. I thought, “holy hell that’s a lot of miles!” It would easily be the highest mileage 930 I’ve ever come across and it looked in pretty nice shape for that many miles. I wanted to know all about it. It’s history likely would be fascinating. Still, I suspected it was a typo. Especially since the seller made no mention of the mileage in the ad (you’d think something like that would come up). We all know that Porsche does some fantastic engineering work so perhaps it could be accurate, even on a 930. Well, it was a typo. The mileage is now shown at a more understandable 59,031. Darn. That removed what seemed the most interesting characteristic of this 930, but it’s still shown in a very nice, and rare, color so it remains worth our time. Here we have a Light Blue Metallic 1979 Porsche 930, located in Los Angeles, with a complementary dark blue leather interior and the stated 59,031 miles on it.
