I’ve always thought the early W463 Mercedes-Benz was the pinnacle of all the G-Wagens that made it to production. It has enough creature comforts to make you feel like you aren’t a member of the Slovak Republic Armed Forces on a counter-terrorism mission (seriously, 43 military organizations around the world use a G-Wagen) but not so many modern toys that everything is already broken inside it or at least on the verge of being. It has comfortable seats, a modern HVAC system, a nice stereo system and some real wood trim. You still got your choice of gas engines as well as a diesel that didn’t have 84 horsepower. Mercedes also gave you a choice of a five-door or a three-door and, perhaps most surprising, a three-door Cabriolet. Today is one of those convertibles for sale in Italy and since it’s a 1992, it’s only one month short of being eligible to be imported to the United States under the 25-year importation rule.
The E38 7-series is perhaps the last classically handsome BMW. Its conservative, purposeful design has aged well and serves as poignant reminder of how things used to be, before the advent of Chris Bangle’s fussy futurism. Plutocratically expensive when new, today you can buy an early, high mileage, rough-around-the-edges example for a mere couple of grand. But the question is – would you want to? A $2k car that cost nearly $100k new is bound to be a ticking time bomb of wallet-rending catastrophe. To get a nice one you have to spend a little (but not too much) to get a lot (quite a lot, in fact). Around $10k will buy you a nicely sorted example – still not a lot of money, when you think about it – and just a smidge more will put you into a Sport model, like this one.
With the holidays approaching why don’t we dream a little bit of those really special gifts. The Grand Prix White 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS Touring we featured back in the Spring remains up for sale. The asking price has dropped a notch or two (not that we’d likely notice given what’s still being asked), but like any RS it remains one of the most costly 911s on the market. This one is priced more in line with what we see for a Sport rather than a Touring so it’s going to be a tough sell. But for that money you get one of the best Porsche has produced and a car any 911 aficionado instantly will recognize and lust after.

The 500E was an M5-baiting super-sedan built on the W124 platform in joint collaboration with Porsche. Offered between 1991 and 1994 with a 5.0 liter V8 generating 322hp and a subtly flared bodykit, these cars earned the clichéd (but accurate) moniker “wolf in sheep’s clothing.†Somewhat forgotten about until recently, not too long ago neat examples could be had for around $10k. Not so any more. As the market has woken up to these cars we’re increasingly seeing more of them for sale at the $30k price point. This particular example breaks that barrier and then some: the seller is asking for a bold $54k.
I’m dabbling in monotones a bit this week, which I began with a green-on-green Porsche 930 and will now turn to this blue-on-blue 3.2 Carrera Coupe. Such lack of contrast isn’t always a good thing on a car, but there are particular colors where it works out fairly well. I thought the green 930 looked really good and I feel the same about this 911. And here there is some contrast as the choice of blue for the interior is a good bit darker than the exterior shade. All in all it’s actually quite beautiful. Here we have a 1986 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe, located in California, with just 21,709 miles on it. The colors are described as light blue over blue. We don’t see the specific paint codes, but I’d wager that light blue exterior is Iris Blue Metallic, a personal favorite from this period.
