2017 BMW M3 Competition Package Individual

Over the past few years, I’ve increasingly noticed mainstream dealers taking their wares to eBay. Usually we don’t cover these cars much – frankly, as a new car, basically you don’t need us to find it for you. Anyone can pop on to their marque of choice and dream away with the builds. But this particular M3 caught my attention because of two reasons; first, the screaming Fire Orange II paint from BMW Individual, and second – the price; at $110,000, nearly double the standard MSRP on a F80 M3. What’s going on?

Well, this car is certainly unique and very heavily optioned. The main addition (outside of the color) is the Competition Package; a $4,750 option on the $64,000 base price, the package gives you a slightly higher power output and 4.0 0-60 time, along with M Active Differential and M Adaptive Suspension, the 20″ M666 forged wheels with 265/285-30 tires, special seats and M-striped seatbelts, gloss grill inserts and special exhaust covers. As options go, it’s easy to see why it’s a popular package – there’s a lot of value in there.

This car also has Black Extended Merino Leather at $950. The Executive Package gets you Park Distance Control, rear camera, wireless charging and wifi, heated steering wheel, head-up display, and retractable headlight washers for a further $3,900. Another $1,900 gets you the LED lighting package with automatic high beams. Add $1,700 in for the Driver Assistance Plus package that gives you cameras, active blindspot monitoring and real time speed limits. Tick the power sunblind for $575 and Appleplay for another $300.

Adding carbon mirror caps sets you back another $1,040. At this point, your M3 is now a $80,000 after it’s been delivered to your local dealer.

Now, what’s interesting to me is that’s about $30,000 shy of the ask here. Typically, BMW’s Individual Paint – the only non-standard item this car has, I believe, will set you back $5,000. Granted, you’ll need to wait a few months for them to make the car, but then you can have it in whatever color you want. On top of that, this car doesn’t have the M Ceramic brakes; at $8,150, by far the most expensive option available for the car.

With your $25,000 premium, then, you do get two nights at the Universal Hilton; a Google search suggests rooms can be had around $200/night. Plus, two round trip tickets to LA to pick up your car and then have them ship it to you – figure that’s another $3,000 or so (at most – again, a quick search just suggested I can get round trip tickets from Boston to LA for as little as $300). I get that the car is eye-catching and if you really love Fire Orange, it’s pretty well set up and you can have it today instead of waiting.

But if you pay a $20,000 premium for that privilege, I’m sorry – you’re just stupid.

Don’t forget that if you have it delivered in Germany, they’ll knock off the cost of the trip+shipping. For the sticker price, you get a free trip to Germany and you get to drive your new M around Europe for a few weeks. Then you have to wait a month or two to be reunited with your car, but still; much better deal!

BEYOND!! stupid. We all know the world has gone off its axis but this will make it do handstands!!

I get that when you are looking at a new BMW we are in the rarefied air of very few buyers. All of whom seemingly have nothing better to do but blow eighty grand on a car. A car. A vehicle. A transportation device. A toaster on wheels. granted a faster toaster This is the modern car equivalent of watching a Barrett Jackson auction……….apropos of the famous aphorism wrongly attributed to P.T Barnum

Also, for me at that price the interior color should be something special.
