I have to give it to Mercedes, they milked as much as they could from the C190 AMG GT chassis. Launched for the 2015 model year, the lineup includes the GT, GT S, GT C, GT R, GT R Pro, GT and GT C Roadster, GT Black Series, and the track-only GT Track Series. Missing from that list is today’s car, the GT R Roadster. Production was limited to just 750 units – probably because they wanted people to just go buy the SL63 AMG.

This is something I didn’t expect AMG to make and was certainly surprised when I heard it was going into production back in 2019. It would be one thing if the AMG GT didn’t have any convertibles in the line-up, but they had many as previously mentioned. The GT R is very much a hardcore sports car that can be very extreme when you turn the drive setting dial the right way and needed Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires on it just to keep it under control. Why put a convertible top in it? No idea. Maybe the planners just need to use up the excess inventory and pitched this as a way to make more dollars per car considering the GT R cars might have a better margin on them.
Speaking of dollars, you’ll need $229,550 to take this one home. For those keeping score at home, that is still probably over sticker price considering these started at around $191,000. I get that this is a limited production car, but there are just so many options at this price point over this strange one.
I would love a GT R, but mine would need the roof on.

you said it best…there are too many options at this price range unless you really have to own one of these. There are Ferrari Californias for example…if you need a flashy convertible sports car.
