Fail Friday: 1970 Porsche 914

Welcome back to Fail Friday, where we try to explain the sometimes unexplainable. Today I’m trying to decipher why someone took a seemingly nice Porsche 914 and turned it into this “thing.” It looks like someone grafted on a giant nose to the front end of the car as well as added some side support up from the rear of the car to the Targa bar. Now what was once a fairly short and squared off car is a long, swoopy one. Inside, it doesn’t get much better as they went a little crazy with the diamond stitching as well as added some custom orange door panels. The price? Thankfully it isn’t as crazy as this car.

1979 Porsche 911SC

In terms of bang for your buck in the air-cooled Porsche world, the 911SC surely is your best bet. You can get them in any shape or size, and thankfully they made a ton of them so you can pick up one up for much less the the 964, 993, or long-hood cars. Naturally that leads to owners not afraid to modify them in a myriad of ways and/or treat them not like investments that need to be babied and preserved the entire time. This is what we have today in this 1979 911SC that is fitted with a 3.2-liter, some exhaust work, and different seats. Its also been painted once, but still has some bump and bruises that make it a less than perfect example.

1968 Mercedes-Benz 250SL

Green is good, even in small doses. The Mercedes-Benz Pagoda series was all about utilizing two-tone color schemes beyond the normal silver over black or black over tan. They’d mix complementary colors together usually on the hard top, hub caps, and interior. They weren’t afraid to take chances, even with non-traditional colors. Case in point, this 250SL finished in white with a Dark Olive hard top and Green Parchment MB-Tex upholstery. Even better? It’s got a 4-speed manual too.

1999 Porsche 911 Carrera

I’ve looked at some cheap Porsche 911s over the years, but never a “rebuilt title US-spec car exported to Eastern Europe” cheap Porsche 911. The 1999 Porsche 911 is generally the cheapest 911 you can buy, with prices in the high-teens for a decent one, but I’m pretty sure I’ve never seen one this cheap that is being offered up in Georgia. The other Georgia, that is.

Ex-Michael Jordan 1996 Mercedes-Benz S600 Coupe

Earlier this spring, ESPN released a six-part documentary about the life and legacy of basketball player Michael Jordan that showcased him like we’ve never seen before. Even as someone who is only mildly interested in NBA, it was a fascinating watch. I wasn’t alone in this, as the ratings were off the charts for all six episodes. As a result, anything Michael Jordan related was now on fire in terms of value and people were eating it up. Even the most mundane things were suddenly as hot as can be and everyone was back on Jordan mania. Well, wouldn’t you have it, that includes cars. Even ones h̶e̶ his wife owned over 20 years ago and now are all beat up with a ton of miles on.

I actually looked at another one of his cars a few years ago in the ultra-rare SLR McLaren 722 Edition, which as the time wasn’t a big deal at all. This isn’t an SLR today, this is just an C140 S600 Coupe with some Lorinser bits bolted on and a bunch of miles. The current bid? Well, this is why eBay doesn’t work for cars like these.
