2001 Audi S8

I’ve recently been engaged in an email exchange with one of our readers comparing the V8 quattro that I love with the later D2 A8/S8. As much as it pains me to admit it and I love that early D11 V8, the reality is in nearly every measurable way the A8 and S8 are probably just a better choice. First, they’re the best part of a decade newer, and while the styling isn’t DTM worthy the D2 is certainly a great looking car in pretty much everyone’s book. The dimensions are right, the stance is great, and the presence is enormous. The D2 also benefited from the developments of the D11 chassis, and while it’s missing the virtually unstoppable Torsen setup of the V8 quattro, the D2 gained in pretty much every other department; refinement, quality, ride comfort, performance, fuel economy and safety. The top of the heap is one of our favorite cars, the S8 – touting 360 horsepower and a stiffer suspension, this is the one to have:

1987 Volkswagen Jetta GLi

Nearly as rare to see as the 1984 Jetta GLi is the model that replaced it, the 1985-1987 8V Jetta GLi. While I’ve lamented several times that we didn’t receive the 4 door GTi until just recently, the reality is that for all intents and purposes, through 1992 the GLi was a 4 door GTi with a trunk. They shared nearly all of their running gear, styling and performance; the only difference was the non-folding seats and the trunk. Despite this the GTi was the more popular option for most, and the GLis that were sold suffered from rust and heavy use. In fact, I can’t remember the last time I saw a fairly clean early A2 GLi for sale; but here’s a pretty good example today!

1997 BMW 540i 6-Speed Racing Dynamics R48 Prototype

Want a M5? There aren’t many that don’t right now. And if the E39 wasn’t already appealing enough, pricing on them is quickly becoming more affordable for the everyday Joe. But for some folks, it’s still too much, and let’s be honest – while M5s are pretty special beasties there are plenty of them out there. So perhaps if today’s no reserve RS6 wasn’t enough to have you looking at the grass on the other side of the fence, then maybe this listing will be enough to peak your interest – the claimed development car for the Racing Dynamics R48, this early build 1997 540i is prime for the driving at a very easy to swallow pricetag and is certainly unique:

2003 Audi RS6

As much as the E39 BMW M5 changed the game for sports sedans, the Audi RS6 took the executive supercar-slayer to the next level. Sporting a twin turbocharged version of the venerable 4.2 V8, the Audi RS6 offered simply stunning performance with 450hp on tap. But horsepower wasn’t the only result of the forced induction, because the RS6 also offered nearly 70 lb.ft of torque more than the S62 motor. Sure, it was a touch heavier than the E39, but on the highway this car was and still is a monster. Like the E39, good condition examples of these super sedans are now trading in the mid 20s; today there is a beautiful grey over grey example with no reserve on the auction. Looking ready to surprise a few 911s, take a look at one of our favorites:

Tuner Tuesday: 1980 Porsche 928 Euro Gemballa

In the crazy world of Euro tuners, Gemballa stands out for some pretty crazy modifications that are sometimes in questionable taste. But in the 1980s you couldn’t flare a car enough, and Gemballa was one of the best. Gemballa actually made several different body kits for the 928, with seemingly few being the same. This particular model sports some of the wider flares and a large enough wing to make your local Lamborghini Countach jealous; mainted in dark blue paint and sitting over some seriously wide BBS wheels it looks ready for a filming session fo the next Rush music video:
