2015 BMW M5 30 Jahre Edition

14019105_7

At this point we’re all familiar with the ridiculous investment opportunity the BMW E30 M3 has been recently. According to Hagerty, average values held steady around $15k from 2007 to 2012, and they were even lower before then. Today, Hagerty estimates the average E30 M3 value is $48k, an easy $30k if you picked one up just 5 years ago.

In these days of “unicorn” start-ups and (allegedly) ridiculous easy riches, 5 years is a pretty long horizon for the make-money-now bunch. In that case, they should have grabbed one of the 30 BMW M5 “30 Jahre Editions” released in the US last year, a 10% share of worldwide production of the ultimate F10 M5 celebrating 30 years of the M5 supersedan. With power bumped to 600hp and a special Frozen Dark Silver that puts most of today’s fancy satin/matte finishes to shame, it is definitely more than just a badge exercise (although there are plenty of self-important badges). Initially sold for $138k, a nice $34k premium over the M5’s MSRP, just one year later you could have triple the profit of that 5-year E30 M3 investment.

Despite the piped-in sound silliness, I do like the F10 M5 and BMW’s modern styling. Though a little overcomplicated, it’s growing on me and vastly preferable to the days of the Bangle Butt. It toes the line between aggressive and subtle while packing a nuclear punch that will keep up with most supercars. Turn all that up to 11 along with an extra dose of rare, and you’ve got the 30 Jahre Edition.

2004 Volkswagen R32

Despite recently hearing blog owner Dan’s personal hell with a MkIV 20th Anniversary GTI, I can’t shake my love for the first-generation R32. Hot hatches are experiencing an incredible resurgence including some noteworthy American offerings, but we’re obviously partial to Teutonic wee beasties here. The R32 still has one of the best exhaust growls out there, and combines a 6-speed with Haldex 4Motion AWD to make an all-season weapon.

They look great in any of the four colors they came in, but this red example is exceptionally clean after 90k miles and a respray of the front bumper and hood to undo the common rock chips. It’s had two owners who each drove it for 45k miles before passing it on. I remember being excited when these got down around $20k; now that good examples are under $15k, I’m even more tempted.

1990 BMW 325is

The last 325is I posted was a lightly modified example that some of our intrepid readers investigated further and found a few inconsistencies, namely a rebuilt engine and a chassis with over 200k miles – a bit different than the 123k claimed.

Today’s 325is seems like it has a lot less to hide, with 232k original miles and no visible or claimed modifications other than a full Bilstein suspension setup bringing it a little closer to the road. Apparently it’s been mostly stored for the last two years after a major servicing. Sounds like an owner who thought they could make a little investment in a clean E30 and get a nice return after a couple of years. With great originality and outstanding condition for the mileage, it’s not a bad bet.

1987 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia Syncro

It’s been a while since we’ve seen the kind of Syncro Westy that can command the better part of a hundred thousand dollars. We’ve seen some nicely restored and modified examples, but even then they’ve struggled to break $40k. Well, folks, we caught a big one. Let’s see if we can haul it aboard.

Inside out and top to bottom, this Westy is mega. Starting with the mechanicals, there’s no Subaru imposter or rebuilt wasserboxer here – it’s a like-new, $35k 1.8T conversion putting out a very healthy 255hp with custom cooling and exhaust systems. Underneath you also get new suspension and a big brake kit, along with a rebuilt front differential and Porsche 930 axles. I especially like the dual fuel tanks for removing any range anxiety when you’re way out in the woods.

From there, we’re just looking at a no-holds-barred interior and exterior. Inside, there’s an entertainment system with a back-up camera surrounded by a custom houndstooth interior. It has everything a Westy lover dreams about, from the solar system connected to twin auxiliary batteries to an on-board air compressor and front-mounted Warn winch, though I’m rather confused as to why they put the Hella lights in a position where they’re blocked by the winch.

This van goes well beyond what is necessary to live the Van Life. It’s an exercise in how far you can go and how many dream-boxes you can check, but the resulting price tag is similarly fantastical.

1988 BMW 325is

Most of our recent BMW E30 posts have centered around the loss of the affordable clean examples. Those that weren’t turned into LeMons toys or smashed into trees by stock traders’ children are usually hoarded and overpriced. Well our patience has paid off, loyal GCFSBers, and we have a clean, mid-mileage example for less than ten grand! It isn’t 100% stock or original, but pretty close; this is no track rat or dorifto thrasher. A short-shift kit and Bilsteins are the only mechanical changes, with a shift knob, aftermarket stereo, and interesting vinyl/cloth interior overhaul the only things separating the interior from its 1988 birth. As clean examples become the stuff of rose-colored dreams, someone should wake up and buy this sweet little legend.
