When it comes to cars of the 1980s, some may drool over the side strakes of the Ferrari Testatossa or the scissor doors of the Lamborghini Countach, but one of my favorite styling themes to emerge from this decade was the widebody look. Popularized on cars such as the Porsche 911 Turbo, other vehicles adapted this design cue to mixed reviews. One of my favorites though was the widebody Mercedes-Benz C126 AMG coupe. This 1990 560SEC AMG Widebody for sale in San Diego is the stuff dreams are made of for me, looking mean as ever on those color matched AMG Monoblock alloy wheels. The wheels aren’t the only thing that is mean, though, as the asking price is sure to scare off the casual punter.

The W116 S-class is one of those Mercedes-Benzes that seems to have been a bit forgotten, sandwiched between two great generations of luxury sedans. This is the case with many cars from the 1970s, but consider just how advanced this car was for its time. This would be the first Mercedes to feature four-wheel anti-lock brakes, in addition to the usual safety accouterments that consumers had become used to from this manufacturer. The W126 S-class that debuted at the dawn of the 1980s would carry the executive car torch even further than before, but that isn’t to say the W116 isn’t without its merits. We’ll take a look at this late production 280SE for sale in Portugal, in very nice original condition fitted with the injected 2.8 liter M110 inline-6.

Comments closedWe tend to take power for granted in this day and age, with your average mid-sized luxury sedans capable of nearing 300 horsepower with not much effort. This was not the case in the early 1990s, when Mercedes-Benz arrived on the scene with their pumped up E-class, the 500E. This Porsche collaboration was dubbed a wolf in sheep’s clothing at the time, with little exterior clues to hint at the 322 horsepower V8 hiding beneath. When your run of the mill 300E had well under 200 horsepower, this was quite impressive. This 1992 500E we see here is a Canadian spec example, looking pretty good considering its age and mileage.

Comments closedThe “Honorable Mention” post from last week seemed to be a popular choice, so I’m back this week with another selection of cars we didn’t get a chance to get to. We’ve got one from each major manufacturer this time around which makes for an interesting and diverse group. Which is the one that deserved a better look this time around?

7 CommentsWe often see vintage collector vehicles so perfectly restored that they seem unapproachable, not just in cost, but in terms of putting them to use. One little scratch and you might not score perfect in that next concours. I never really cared much for such bastions of perfection, though. Which is why a car like this 1958 Mercedes-Benz 300SL has caught my attention. This 300SL is in largely original condition, having passed through two owners with an interesting, global story to boot. What price patina, then?
