Outside of the AMG tuned model, it’s no longer possible for US customers to spec an E-class sedan with a V8 engine. I was surprised to come across this fact the last time I logged on to Mercedes’ USA website. This might seem rather alarming, however, manufacturers have advanced technology to the point where V6 engines, some with the benefit of turbocharging, can produce V8 levels of power with greater economy. Over 20 years ago, the E-class was graced with its first eight-cylinder powerplant, in the form of the M119, a twin-cam, 32-valve V8. Thus, the 400E was born. While the W124 would bow out of the lineup in 1995, the V8 gave this sedan a shot in the arm it needed to compete with newfound competition from the Asian manufacturers. Unlike the Porsche built, performance minded 500E, it’s rather hard to find a 400E in good shape these days. However, this 400E for sale in Michigan looks sharp with larger 16″ wheels in the stock pattern with its lower body cladding painted to match.

After failing to sell in 2014, the Euro-spec manual 280SE with some AMG bits that appeared here twice last year is back up for sale with a lower price but from the same seller. This car appears to be really unique and well presented and would certainly turn heads at any show. I especially love the over the top AMG-spec wheels and Euro-goodies that slim down and beef up the S-Class just a bit. At $9,999, this seems like a good deal for a great vintage Benz:

Comments closedAs I have mentioned previously, there are not many Mercedes models that I really lust after. Sure, there are models that I certainly wouldn’t mind driving if someone handed me the keys to them but very few that I really desire. The car you see here is one of those few, in fact it’s at the very top of the list. I would take this car over an SLS, C63 or even the new AMG GT any day because while those cars might be luxurious, pretty and insanely fast, they lack the uniqueness Mercedes and AMG were able to instill in the car you see before you. The 190E 2.5-16 was a rare car to begin with, but in 1989 Mercedes added the Evo I designation to the mix creating a new tier of rare for the brand. Only 502 of these fantastic machines were built and like the regular 2.5 liter equipped 190Es, none of them came to our shores. If you want to own what I consider the coolest Mercedes ever built, you’ll have to import one or move out of the U.S. I hear Portugal is quite nice almost year round.

3 CommentsThroughout the years, Mercedes-Benz has dabbled with über sedans to cater to its wealthiest clientele. The 600 was, and still is, considered by many to be a watershed moment in executive motoring. Later on in 1992, the 600SEL was perched atop the S-class range, with it’s 6.0 liter V12 engine and available four-place seating. Their latest chapter saw the revival of a storied name from years past: Maybach. Sadly, the brand lasted but a scant decade, from 2002 to 2012. In the eighties, it was a different story, with the top dog being this car: the 560SEL. From 1986 to 1991, this car was the vehicle of choice for businessmen, celebrities and heads of state the world over. Today, the W126 S-class is still revered for its durability and classic, restrained Mercedes-Benz styling. This 560SEL for sale in California is a minter, with just over 53,000 miles on the clock.

4 CommentsMy affection for the original super sleeper is well known but this Anthracite Grey Metallic Mercedes-Benz 500E in Chicago has taken them to a whole new level. This is without a doubt the cleanest 500E I’ve come across and as one would expect, the excellent condition of the vehicle is reflected in the asking price. With a Buy It Now price of $39,800, it certainly represents the high end of the market. If this vehicle is indeed in concours condition, however, I don’t think the price is unreasonable. These cars are very rare. Only 1,528 of them made it to the US and of those, I’d be willing to bet this is among the ten best kept vehicles.
