The introduction of the W208 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class was a little bit of a shock if you were coming from a W124 E-Class coupe. Suddenly everything that was square was now round, and the interior felt….well, a little less quality. I’m sure Mercedes had some kind of spin about how it was modernizing it for the new millennium, but there was no mistaking the difference. You also were swapping a smooth inline-six for a squared-off V6, which I’m sure buyers didn’t really notice the difference of – as long as it started every morning. I think time gave us the answer as really nice E320 Coupes sell for strong money, while the best CLK320 examples, like the one we have today, won’t even sell for half that value.

One of the more surprising stories in the niche car market is that basically every used second-generation W463 Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen is selling for way over sticker price. I am not underplaying it by saying “way over” sticker price: a new G63 AMG starts at $156,000, but these are now hitting the market for $225,000 even with a bunch of miles. Blame it on a bunch of factors, but basically the modest factory in Graz, Austria just can’t build them fast enough. Almost every market in the world wants them, and there’s apparently enough money and demand to outstrip production. It is a far cry from just 15 years ago, when Mercedes sold just 587 examples for the entire model year in the US.
This 2021 up for sale in Florida has 5,700 miles already accrued, and it is already on to its second owner. But the price? Well, you guessed it.

5 CommentsThese are always fun. This is a 1987 Mercedes-Benz 230E with a mere 995 kilometers, or 618 miles for us Americans. The story says that it was used as a dealer demo car for a showroom in Germany then stashed into storage until recently discovered. As crazy as it is to see 618 miles, this is about as basic as a W124 gets. The M102 inline-4 with a cloth interior, no power windows, no air conditioning, and a manual transmission. Puzzling at the time, but now as we are entering an era where some covet for basic models with nothing to go wrong, it is tough to argue against this one. Problem is, this one comes with a massive price tag. Like, nice 500E price tag.

4 CommentsI don’t think anyone has ever really slept on the W140 Mercedes-Benz S-Class, but it certainly seems in the past 18 months or so that people are getting wise to their collectability. We’ve seen some really nice S600 examples sell for big money and then even bigger money given low miles and outstanding condition. However, they made a ton of W140s and I’m willing to bet they’ll be way more on the market than the demand will command. This isn’t a 500E or 2.3-16v, then was the very mass produced range topper.
Naturally, when I see what looks like a clean W140, I have to take a look not only to see the condition, but what the owner is thinking of in terms of value. Unfortunately this owner is slightly overestimating the current value. More like slightly.
