I’m all for wild interiors. Give them to me all. If it is between beige or turquoise, I’ll take the turquoise any day of the week. Although the caveat here is that it has to make sense. I don’t want any Ronald McDonald-looking interior or some creation from “Crazy Rick’z House of Leather” that the fourth owner decided to go with. Today’s car, a very rare 1997 911 Turbo S, has one of those wild interiors. Although different, it misses wildly on one thing.
Even though Porsche produced almost 200,000 G-Series cars from 1973 to 1989, that doesn’t mean they are getting any less expensive. Looking back ten years ago, you could grab a regular Carrera coupe in the $25,000 – 30,000 range be totally content with your purchase. Today? Double that. This is the reality of buying cool old sports cars in the year 2022 and it seems like there are plenty of buyers out there for them. Today’s car, a 1986 Carrera coupe in White Gold Metallic surely has all the looks, but the price? Well, it’s tough to swallow.
The 2016 model year was the last for the 981 Porsche Cayman chassis, and you know what that means: Random special editions that no one has heard of or really even asked for. This is the Cayman “Black Edition” that was just a handful of options packaged together and some “Black Edition” door sills. There were no performance additions or even suspension upgrades. We probably saw this coming as there was a 2012 Cayman Black Edition which was, you guessed it, the final year of the 987 chassis. They really don’t do anything to resale value other than a “that’s interesting” passing comment since it literally is just a bunch of pre-selected options, but hey, those door sills are cool, right?
Remember the old saying, “The fastest car is always a rental”? While that might be true in a lot of cases, there are cars that are faster: the “Corporate Executive” vehicle. Why? These cars operate with the same philosophy as the rental cars, but are actually fast to begin with, and not Chrysler 200s from the airport rental parking lot with stale donuts under the seats. They are treated with the same disregard for ownership as the rentals, although usually luxury cars with way more power than Ted the CFO at the oil and gas company actually needs. Case in point? This 2013 Porsche Cayenne GTS up for sale in Texas with over 205,000 miles on it. Yes. One owner and 205,000 miles in 10 years. Over 20,000 miles a year on this GTS, which isn’t exactly a beacon of cheap running cars or reliability. I hope the write-off was worth it on this one.
I know I’m all about the colors, but some maybe are just a tad too far. Case in point: Lizard Green. This is a color you need to be prepared to be asked about every time you stop for fuel. It is so crazy that it is even a little tough to be taken seriously. If you are a lawyer, have fun driving this one to court dates. A C-level exec at a large company? Nothing says “I make a ton of money!” like a lime green Porsche parked out front. You have to own this color and own it fully. Thankfully the car that it is painted on, a 2020 911 Carrera S, has the numbers to back it up. Independent reviews are still clocking this thing to 60-mph in 3 seconds flat and standing ¼-mile times of 11.3 seconds. It is that fast – all while being totally comfortable and reliable. What a world!
