1955 Porsche 356 Pre-A Speedster

We’ve shown quite a few 911 Speedsters over the past few months, either in the guise of the 3.2 Carrera or the 964 Carrera 2, but I cannot recall the last time we featured the original, the car those 911s were intended to recreate in spirit: the 356 Speedster. Here we have one of those rare examples: an Aquamarine Metallic 1955 Porsche 356 Pre-A Speedster. Released in 1954 the first Speedsters were quite a success, though the overall run would be short-lived as interest waned and the Speedster was replaced in 1958 with the Convertible D, followed by the 356 Roadster. With a spartan interior, minimalist top, and removable windscreen the Speedster was intended to appeal to weekend racers and those who wanted a no-frills, lower-cost, Porsche and during those initial years that’s exactly what it did, especially in the sunny environs of California. The short life the model lived has made the 356 Speedster a highly sought after collectible with the earliest examples being particularly noteworthy. Because we come across them so rarely they are almost always worth our attention.

Winter Fresh: 1991 Porsche 911 Carrera 2

With so many models to choose from, I’m constantly going over what kind of Porsche 911 I would buy if the opportunity presented itself in the future. Sure the new ones are technical marvels and the classics are well, just that. But there has always been something about the 964 that has drawn me in. Specifically, the Carrera RS that wasn’t sold in the US market. Paint it Mint Green like we see on this 1991 Carrera 2 for sale at 4 Star Classics and well, it pretty much summarizes my perfect 911. However, do I need the edginess of a Carrera RS for what would admittedly be a weekend cruiser and not a track day beast? Probably not. But this Carrera 2 does a good job on the outside of mimicking the look of the RS with it’s Cup alloys. The rest of it is standard 964 fare, which is good enough for me.

Wednesday Wheels Roundup

It’s another Wednesday and time for another rare wheel roundup! Today I have some more of my favorites lined up, starting with ones close to my heart – Ronal R8 option wheels. These are the lower offset wheels that have the spokes curve in to create a nice lip; were they 4x108mm, rest assured I wouldn’t have posted them and they’d be in the mail to me. They’re rare to find in either bolt configuration but would suit an early GT/4000, Volkswagen or (gasp!) E21 or E30 well. There are two sets of OZ Racing Vega wheels – one for Porsche, the other for Mercedes-Benz. They’re a neat BBS alternative and rare to see. The Audi A3 S-Line wheels may be one you haven’t seen before as most of the S-Line cars came with either larger 17″ wheels or the more BBS-esque wheels. Boy, they’re cheap – a great rare winter setup, perhaps? The Gotti wheels are so over the top they’re almost cool again! And the same goes for the polished Zenders – a rare find with plenty of character to set you apart. What’s your favorite?

1970 Porsche 911S Coupe

These days the demand for a hot 911 is nearly unmatched, especially for one of the air-cooled models. Whether it be a 911 Turbo or any of the variety of lightened and more powerful naturally aspirated variants these cars continue to command respect and adulation among Porsche enthusiasts. One of the first produced was the 911S. Introduced in 1967, the S combined more power, better braking and suspension, and a lower overall weight to produce one of best performing cars of its day, all the while still remaining comfortable and streetable enough for everyday use. The example featured here is a European delivery Blue Metallic 1970 Porsche 911S Coupe, restored by Aase Sales in Ohio, that shows 58,095 km (about 36,098 miles). For the 1970MY the entire 911 line had received a bump in engine displacement from 2.0 liters to 2.2 liters with the 911E and S now featuring Bosch multi-point injection.

1994 Porsche 911 Turbo 3.6

The Turbo 3.6. An enduring favorite of pretty much everyone and we especially enjoy coming across them around here. In the short life span of the 964 the Turbo 3.6 existed for a mere two years serving as a showcase of what Porsche had hoped to achieve with the car from the outset, even if it took some time to arrive. While the standard 964 began life with a new 3.6 liter flat-six engine and significantly redesigned body, the Turbo filled those new curves with the 3.3 liter turbocharged flat-six carried over from the 930. While great in and of themselves, those early 964 Turbos were always a stopgap while we waited for the full expression of these cars. They were worth the wait. In today’s market, a Turbo 3.6 far eclipses most 3.3 liter Turbos in value and like it or not many seem to have spent most of their lives in a nice garage, rarely driven. Here we have just such a car: a Black 1994 Porsche 911 Turbo 3.6, located in Illinois, with Red leather interior and just 17,358 miles on it.
