In the days when 930s were a tad bit more affordable than they’ve become in recent years, it wasn’t uncommon to see blown-engine examples be turned into track creations. It makes a fair amount of sense – with upgrades brakes and wider flares, the Turbo model was a natural born track car. So with that in mind, we have two very different routes that seemingly similar cars could take; both based upon Turbo models, which is your track-flavored style? First we’ll look at the 3.6 flat-6 RSR-styled PCA racer:

The car is very well sorted, runs great and is fast, just turn the key and go. It has been run at Lime Rock Park, Watkins Glen, VIR, Road Atlanta, Sebring and Daytona. The car has been built and maintained by Musante Motorsports in CT, a notable Porsche race shop.
The car is sold AS-IS, WHERE-IS with no warranties of any kind. I highly encourage all interested parties to come view the car in person prior to placing a bid or purchasing the car. $1,000 non-refundable deposit required at auction end with the remainder due when the car is picked up. Car must be removed from my possession within 14 days of auction end or else the car will be relisted and sold to someone else. Title available.
I popped this car up on our Facebook Fanpage last week when I spotted it last minute; it didn’t sell and came back so it’s worth a look. Musante Motorsports has become much more well known over the past few years in the larger community, but Chris has been building great cars for a few decades now – and cut his teeth racing a 911 very similar to this build, so it’s reasonable to say that this car was well built with a lot of hands-on knowledge. The build sheet is impressive, and in full race-spec these 911s are massively quick despite their age. The updated naturally aspirated engine should be a more cost-effective route than a turned up Turbo unit, and that same logic was applied to the transmission and brakes. Outside, the car appears similar to the RSR styled cars but is generally a clean slate – throw a classic 911 racer livery on there and it would look more the part – without changing the color, for example, a few well placed Jagermeister decals would look the part. But if you want a bit more of a sleeper, how about this hybrid?
The Porsche faithful may look down on it, but the idea of stuffing an all-aluminum V8 in the back of a 911 is intriguing to me. If done properly, the balance shouldn’t be negatively impacted and the power delivery is certainly better than the original 930 unit. Additionally, power upgrades can be had very inexpensively and there’s an active aftermarket community – that is, if you need more power than the 500 on tap from the already potent LS7. Plus, outside you maintain the awesome 930 look; in this case augmented with some 934/IROC inspired pieces:

Okay, the asking price on this 930 is pretty much through the roof; but compare it to the Singer cars and this is a neat alternative at half the price. Go to the track and there shouldn’t be much that can keep up in a straight line – head to a show and you’ll be sure to draw a crowd. While the new 911 may be an impressive all-around car, something like this car is pretty compelling and certainly looks very attractive! Of the two, it’s the one I’d want to have even though the price is significantly higher right now. Which would you like?
