The below post originally appeared on our site October 14, 2014:

In his retirement speech, General Douglas MacArthur once said “old soldiers never die, they just fade away.” Well, old Mercedes-Benzes never seem to die, nor do they fade away. Look around the street on any given day and you’ll probably come across a Mercedes that is closing in on twenty years old, or more. Even some of the more vintage models, like this 1967 230, is still trucking along, with a beautiful patina adorned with vintage California black plates. The fins would disappear from the Mercedes portfolio after 1968, situating this 230 as the last of its breed.

I’ve always been a bit partial to the Fintail Benzes, or Heckflosse as they are known in their native market. My father owned two of them, a 1962 190c with a four-speed manual on the column and a 1967 230s with a four-speed manual on the floor. These W110s like this 230 here is one of the most affordable ways into a vintage Benz for not much cash. An example such as this will no doubt bring the big dollars, perhaps somewhere in the $10,000 to $15,000 range. With no reserve, we’ll be watching to see where this one lands.

It looks like a great driver. I would prefer a manual over the fluid-coupling automatic, but the condition is exactly right, with just enough blemishes to keep it from looking “restored.”
