Wednesday Wheels GCFSB Project: 2002 Volkswagen Passat GLS 1.8T Variant Part 1

While we all want to have a classic, sporty German car in our lives, the reality of daily driver duty often falls onto less exotic cars. Several years ago I purchased a 1999 Volkswagen Passat 1.8T GLS to do just that; it replaced a 97 Golf as my daily driver, and I enjoyed over 100,000 miles behind the wheel. Unlike the reputation these cars have gained, I found my Passat to be very reliable – it never once left me stranded or failed to start, it could get 36 mpg if I didn’t get too deep into the throttle, and it was comfortable, quick and fun to drive. After a year of company car duty, the time had come for me to purchase another daily driver, and my immediate thought was that I wanted another Passat.

The search began, and it wasn’t very easy. There are two classes of Passats; devoted owners that keep their cars in great condition, and wrecks that will bankrupt you trying just to pass emissions. But in general the wagon versions were better kept than the sedans; likely a testament to their high sticker prices. It’s hard to fathom, but in 2002 my current car’s sticker price was over $26,000 – more than a brand new Passat will set you back today. As such, the Variants seem to be better kept than the sedans in general, and that was certainly the case when I finally found the car to buy. Priced higher in the market, it was a one-owner 100,000 mile Ink Blue model with grey leather. A GLS spec, it came with many nicer features and alloys, but wasn’t the wood-lined V6 luxury model. The single owner had been meticulous and had every record from new. It was the first time I had ever bought a car like this, and it was clearly worth the premium.

1981 Porsche 911SC

Yesterday, I passed a new 911 in a metallic sky blue I hadn’t seen before. It was so bright it caught me off guard, and looked a little out of place. On the 911SC however, it is perfectly offset by the black trim, especially when complimented by black Fuchs like this example. As 911s follow the rest of the automobile (and human?) race in getting larger and fatter with each progressive generation, it makes me want to reach back further and further when I think about owning a 911. The SC may look like a drug dealer’s car to some, but I love the “Tea Tray” spoiler and black fender guard. While today’s 911s are insanely fast and relatively safe compared to their ancestors, the stories and possibility of pendulum-action oversteer gives me that butterfly nervous-excited feeling.

1979 Porsche 911SC Targa

Let’s continue with a little bit of a summer theme and look at another option in the world of open-air 911s. Here we have a Silver 1979 Porsche 911SC Targa, located in Conway, South Carolina (near Myrtle Beach), with just 41,504 miles on it. For a beach car (at least in an area that can get quite hot during the summer) a Targa seems like a pretty worthwhile choice as it provides the option of open-air cruising year round, but with the ability to have a semi-hardtop during the hottest months. Granted, you’d want a well working A/C in such a car, which is an area where many of these cars struggle, but it’s still another option for someone who is less interested in the full convertible experience. This particular 911 has seen only a few thousand miles over the past two decades so it’d be good to give it a thorough inspection, but there is sure to be quite a lot of life left in it.

1978 Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9 Euro-Spec

I’ll get this right out of the way, and I’m sure that it won’t be the most popular statement: I’m not a big fan of the Ronal Turbo wheels. It’s strange, because I like many, many wheels, but something about the recent editions of the Ronal Turbo just leave me flat. Perhaps its the racing look put onto cars that aren’t racing cars, or the wrong offset, or the wrong finish – I’m not sure. But whenever I see a set pop up on a newer Audi, Volkswagen or BMW I’m just not impressed. However, throw an original set of 3-piece Ronal Turbos on an iconic car from the late 1970s and suddenly they work. Oh, how they work!

1984 Audi Quattro

To me, it’s pretty amazing that the Quattro hasn’t really received the attention of the E30 M3. The Quattro beat the M3 to the market by 6 years with its squared, chunky boxflare stance. It was all-wheel drive, turbocharged and cutting edge. It revolutionized the World Rally Championship and firmly cemented Audi in the halls of motorsports and enthusiasts minds. The offbeat 5-cylinder hanging in front of the wheels seemed an odd choice, but Audi has returned with an updated version of that power plant in some of its newer models, and the sound and performance is no less memorable than it was in the original. Indeed, in terms of what a single car did for a brand, the Quattro was much more influential for Audi than the E30 M3 was for BMW in my mind. Yet today, if you want to get a great condition E30 M3 with under 100,000 miles you’re looking at over $50,000 to play; if you want to get into the original Quattro, nice examples can be had for half that amount:
