Motorsport Monday: 1970 Saab 96 Rally Car

Wondering what a SAAB 96 is doing here? Well, here’s a little known fact: the vaunted Audi Quattro won Rally Monte Carlo once; the SAAB 96 won it twice. But there was not much snow there, you say? Okay, how about Rally Sweden, where the 96 equaled the Quattro’s 4 victories? Still not convinced? How about the RAC Rally in Great Britain? Sure, the Audi won it three years on the trot – 1981, 1982 and 1983 – but then, so did the SAAB, in 1960, 1961 and 1962, with two more victories that followed. But great names drove the Audi, you say. Names like Stig Blomqvist Per Ekland, perhaps? Yup, they drove for the Swedes, too. But beyond the wins, there was something that was just neat and quirky about the 96; an idea that would see evolution right through the takeover of SAAB by General Motors. They always did things differently, and you know what? It worked, and we liked it, so today let’s look at a Swedish neighbor:

1989 BMW 325i Touring

$_57

Wagons. We love them here at GCFSB and with each passing year, a few more models become available to US customers that weren’t sold in this market originally. This 325i Touring is prime in the crosshairs of vintage Bimmer enthusiasts and a few have made their way over to these shores already. This Lachsilber 325i Touring with BBS basketweaves has been recently imported and is ready to be picked up by its next owner down in sunny Florida.

Clean 1992 Mercedes 600SEL, good $ per cylinder ratio

1992 Mercedes 600SEL4

We love no reserve auctions. Particularly ones that start at under $1,000 for a car that once cost well over $100,000 when new. We’ve reported before about how these big Benzs with V-12s  can be a nightmare in terms of maintenance, but this one looked particularly clean and with no reserve, if the price is right, there may be some $s left over to help with inevitable repairs. I think the W140 probably isn’t as bad as the next generation of V12 Mercedes when it comes to work and cost to own, people just give it a bad rap because of the extra cylinders.

1968 BMW 1600 S14 swap

The BMW 2002 is a legendary car that defined the small sports sedan category by most accounts. Compact, rear wheel drive, and with enough power to have fun, you could drive the 2002 at 9/10ths most of the time without crashing at breakneck speed. Try pushing today’s cars to their limits; imagine if you could get a new M4 into a 4 wheel drift on an exit ramp – what speed would you have to be going? Probably faster than the original top speed of the 2002 is my guess, and the ability to drive a slow car fast is what makes some older cars so appealing. But for some people, that base small sedan just isn’t enough, and they go about upgrading the original car. I’m certainly not opposed to this, as it’s something I did with my Audi Coupe – take a later model, higher output motor that is in the same character as the original motor and Viola! Instant happiness. I can only imagine the smiles that this S14 motored 1968 1600 generates then:
