One of the more rare-to-see models in the 944 lineup is the 1988 Silver Rose edition Turbo S. In October I wrote up a lower-mile Silver Rose that remains for sale, but now there are two on Ebay. In that earlier post, I suggested these Turbo S models are going to be more highly sought after because of the rarity of the color combination. Despite this, in a bang-for-buck comparison to it’s direct competitors – the Audi Quattro and BMW M3 – the 944 Turbo remains a solid value and outperforms either in stock form. In fact, I’d argue it’s a much better all-arounder if you’re only carrying two people. It gets better mileage, will out-turn both, has a sizeable hatch area, is more comfortable and relaxed on the highway, and will handily out accelerate either. Still, as it was the go-to car for such a long time, mint condition examples are drying up and expect to see values climbing very soon. So which of the two Silver Rose editions will be the one for you – lower miles or lower asking price? Let’s start with the old “cheaper is better” adage:

Back in August, Paul wrote up a well sorted 1984 Audi Quattro with an impressive 400hp 20V Turbo swap. Though the car looks just about perfect and values of these have risen sharply over the past few years, this car remains available and popped back up on Kijiji.Ca for $30,000. While that may sound like a lot of money for a Quattro, with the collector status of these cars pretty firmly cemented and clean examples pushing into the high teens without the serious engine build and details of this car, it may just be a great deal for the right buyer! If we were going to build a great Quattro driver and show car, this is how we’d do it. You certainly would have a difficult time replicating this car’s condition for the asking price and it’ll pretty soundly thrash that $30,000 E30 M3 you’ve had your eye on…

The Mercedes SEC diesel is stil for sale, runs fine on vegetable oil and also on diesel or a mix for more than 403,100km without any technical problems. It starts even at minus 10 degrees celsius thanks to the fuel heating filter system which first runs on battery power and later swiches to motor heat convection. I dropped the price to €6,000, because The Netherlands raised taxes to a level that is no longer interesting for me to keep this dream machine on the road. 1 CommentThe Volkswagen Scirocco was a clean design when it was originally launched, and in my mind is even cleaner today. The pretty simplicity of the design really sets it apart from the more recent offerings from pretty much every car manufacturer. While the Scirocco was never intended to be a race car or scorch you with light-your-hair-on-fire performance it is a neat package that combined a pretty Italian design with reliable German underpinnings. Three decades on, finding these cars in any state is pretty rare – but especially rare in the state we find this 1981 Scirocco today:

5 CommentsIt seems that a lot of the cars we know and love from the 1980s have been taking flight when it comes to values. Whether it’s the ubiquitous E30 M3 or the 4000S Quattro that sold for over $12,000 yesterday, it’s apparent that the this era has now evolved into classic territory for us thirtysomething folks who remember these machines fondly from our youth. This 1980 Volkswagen Rabbit Diesel for sale in Maryland might not have the pace and cache of the Mk1 Rabbit GTI, but it’s an honest to goodness survivor sure to please the Volkswagen enthusiast.
