1991 Mercedes-Benz 300E

3 In the past I’ve sung the praises of the W201 as a classy yet affordable daily driver (see here and here). But for some, the compact Baby Benz is just a little too small. The good news is that all the best features of the W201 - the classic styling, bank vault build quality and over-engineered platform that yields surprisingly high levels of crash protection  – can all be had in the roomier W124. Produced between 1984 and 1996, this generation of the E-class is in many ways the definitive 80s-era Benz: handsome, practical and built to outlive its owners. Indeed, since these cars are so long-lasting, there’s no shortage of them out there for sale, with a wide variety of examples available to suit all manner of tastes and budgets – sedans, wagons, coupes and convertibles, gas or diesel engines, hoopty or minter. Most of these fall on the affordable side (with the exception of the 500E super sedan), offering a lot of substance for very little money. This particular car is a fairly basic 300E, but it caught my eye because it ticks all the right boxes: a nice color, low miles and a good price.

1989 Mercedes-Benz 560SEC

Walk around any new car lot these days and one thing seems to be lacking: color. Even scanning the Porsche lot I visited a few days ago, there was not much on hand outside of silver, white and black. Sure, these colors are good for resale, but where’s everyone’s imagination these days? What ever happened to some of the bright colors of yore that graced some of the cars we know and love? Signal Red might not be your typical S-class hue, but it sure makes a statement on this 1989 560SEC. After all, this was a car devised as a personal luxury coupe. Why not personalize it? This 560SEC for sale in Seattle is closing in on 100,000 miles, has been garaged since new and comes replete with service records from the Mercedes-Benz dealer.

1994 Mercedes-Benz E320 Coupe

When one thinks of rare examples of the W124, the 500E/E500 instantly comes to mind. But there’s another rare piece from the end of the production run that were not too common, which is the E320 Coupe. Fewer than 1,000 of these E-class coupes found their way to the US market in 1994 and after the 1995 model year, they would disappear from the lineup altogether, to be replaced shortly thereafter by the CLK range. This 1994 E320 Coupe for sale in Washington state has a very low 32,000 miles on the odometer and certainly looks the part, in a very period shade of Spruce Green Metallic.

1995 Mercedes-Benz E320 Estate

It’s rather amazing to think it’s been over 20 years since the W124 Mercedes-Benz ceased production. The lines of this car are timeless, in my opinion. The W124 also set the template for the E-class model lineup for years to come. Sedan and estate variants were mainstays, while the E-class coupe and cabriolet transitioned to the CLK moniker for about a decade span only to return back to the E-class coupe and convertible recently. Fast versions have been ever present, as well, beginning with the legendary 500E/E500 in 1992. But we’ll focus on the estate variant today, and this final year E320 Estate for sale in Florida is a looker. With only 85,000 miles on the clock, this Brilliant Silver beauty is bound to make some discerning family happy.

1991 Mercedes-Benz 300TE

W124-1

The W124 Mercedes-Benz Estate is a favorite around this site and personally one of my favorite cars that were ”honest”. They had the enormous task of following the legendary W123 Estates and giving Mercedes wagon buyers just a little more. It had to have the same quality of the W123 but be a little faster, a little more comfortable, hold a little more and live up to the standard that Mercedes was known at the time. Without saying, the W123 Estate is still king in the used Mercedes wagon market, but if you don’t want to spend a bunch of money on a car that is over 30 years-old at it’s youngest version, the W124 300TE is still a great buy. This example on the beaches of New Jersey can still give you everything you want from a Mercedes-Benz Estate.
