You might think that a car that has a simple button to raise its power by 100 horses might have enough, but today we have two E60 M5s that will explain to you why that kind of thinking makes you a peacenik ninny. I mean, if you can get a V10 in used Audis, then you have to do something to make your M5 stick out, right? These two E60s take pretty different approaches to power and style – supercharger vs. stroker, manual vs. SMG, Eurotuner vs. Roundel – but both represent about as insane of Autobahn stormers as you can find.

1980 Volkswagen Rabbit

This Mint Green Rabbit was an estate find and the title is still in the original owner’s name giving you the chance to be just the second owner after 35 years. Its condition is almost as mint as its exterior, having covered just 46k miles in those three and half decades. It’s not perfect, with a few small rust corners that show repair/repaint attempts and a fading hatch, but overall it’s a very pretty 4-door Rabbit. Somewhere along the lines it sounds like the original manual was swapped out for an automatic transmission, a questionable choice but somewhat in accordance with its history of low use by old folks. The color, the vintage, and the condition make it the perfect car for the well-coiffed hipster or a nostalgic grandma.

1976 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 Coupe

I’ve been trying to find a greater number of 911s that fall within the reasonable value spectrum – cars that perhaps more of us could aspire to own. This is not one of those cars, but I couldn’t pass it up. Here we have a restored Mint Green 1976 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 Coupe located in California. We should not let the ad’s mileage statement fool us: this has not been a garage queen. While it has not traveled much over the past twenty years – only 10K miles since the completion of its restoration – the first two decades of its life were lived quite fully as it traveled nearly 150K miles. Now it has been brought back to its former glory and looks in very good condition with little evidence of all those miles traveled. The Carrera 3.0 is a special model that we don’t see many of. Never available in the US they were an evolution of the Carrera 2.7 MFI, which itself was an evolution of the iconic 1973 911 Carrera RS, and they used a naturally aspirated version of the 3.0 liter flat-six found in the 930. These were a far cry from the 911s we had here in the US during those years, showcasing both more power and less weight. And, of course, their lineage makes them quite desirable.

2003 Volkswagen Passat W8 4Motion Variant 6-speed – REVISIT

The rare to find 6-speed Variant version of the B5.5 chassis Passat W8 that we looked at last month is back up for sale. The seller has dropped the “Buy It Now” price by $1,000 to $8,995 – more in line with top-of-the-market B5.5 Passats like the TDi Variants and low mile examples. While it’s possible to get more performance out of the Audi 6-speed Avants of either B5 or B6 generation for around the same money, this is one pretty neat sleeper if you’re willing to put up with the maintenance factor of the unique engine.

1983 Audi Quattro

Considering what it takes to be called a supercar these days, it’s somewhat amazing that in the early 1980s the Audi Quattro sparked such a revolution. After all, the boxflared wonder arrived in the U.S. costing about the same as a Porsche 911 but sporting only 160 horsepower. Factor in the relatively heavy for then (though admittedly light by today’s standards) 3,000 lb curb weight, and the Quattro was anything but high performance by the standards we consider today. But a revolution in performance it was, as it allowed you to push the car hard in any condition with confidence. Recently I watched the old Motorweek clip on the Quattro; performance was about what you’d expect from the numbers presented above and is probably on par with a base Honda Civic these days. But still the reviewers raved about the performance of the luxury coupe, and though few sold on these shores they’ve always enjoyed a cult following which today is growing into a greater appreciation:
