Double Take: Red E30 M3s

Ahh, red E30 M3s. Sure, these boxy bulldogs look good in just about any hue, but red as a symbol of lust and speed is not the exclusive property of the Italians. Red also plays an interesting part in the E30 M3’s history, as the striking, orange-tinted Hennarot was discontinued after one year in the US and supplanted by Zinnoberrot, a deeper and more classic hue. Both are beautiful in their own right, but Hennarot’s intensity and rarity has elicited more fandom and desire in an already-vociferous market.

Today we have two beautiful M3s from the same seller and in the same price range, each a shining example of its chosen red with a couple of unique touches.

Wednesday Wheels Event Report: Sunday in the Park – Lime Rock Vintage Festival 2015

For those with a good memory, you may remember my posts about last year’s work on refinishing a set of BBSs. Well, the time had finally come and a killer deal on Dunlops from The Tire Rack presented itself, and I pulled the trigger. Stories of leaky RSs and my father’s experience with his vintage Euro M6 TRX RSs led me to look for a sealant to add; although I hadn’t pulled apart the wheels, there’s no denying that they’re the best part of 30 years old at this point and the original seal could be suspect. I picked up some GE metallic-colored silicone from Amazon, and about 10 minutes of work applying, smoothing the bead in between the sandwich of the 3 piece wheels and 24 hours of drying later the RSs were ready for rubber for the first time in a decade.

1987 Volkswagen Vanagon Syncro Hightop

Despite the unassuming beige-black-and-steel exterior, this is one of the most excellent Vanagons I’ve seen in a while. Looking every bit a well-used 1987 camper, it’s been updated and made complete in all the ways that count, highlighted by a Subaru 3.0-liter H6 conversion driving all four wheels via Syncro. High tops have been growing on me for their unique look and easily-accessible space. Two queen beds and lots of storage with four-wheel drive? I always wanted an office in the mountains. With a massive list of repairs and service, this Adventurewagen is fully set to live up to its name if you can afford it.

2003 Audi A6 2.7T Quattro

In the late 1990, Volkswagen began the long push to become the segment leader for mid-sized sedans. The B5 Passat was a leap forward over the slow selling and somewhat cantankerous B4 Passat, catching their Japanese competition off-guard. The styling was smooth and almost Bauhaus-like. The Audi A6 that would arrive on the scene in 1997 echoed a lot of the new Passat’s attractive lines wrapped into a more luxurious package. A number of C5 A6s were available, from the garden variety 2.8 to a fire-breathing RS6 with it’s biturbo V8. This 2.7T Quattro splits the middle in terms of performance, with the 2.7 liter biturbo V6 mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. This one has had a host of maintenance and comes with an upgraded RS4 clutch.

2011 Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0

Any ultimate 911 will be highly coveted. But when that ultimate 911 was never expected to be produced and happens to be a version that followed upon multiple variants of the model, then we really begin to step into rarefied air. For its homologation purposes Porsche released its first GT3 RS as part of the 996 model line. Those cars were never available in the US market so when it was announced that the 997 GT3 RS would make it to our shores, there was much rejoicing. But Porsche was restless and the 997 GT3 RS would see not one, not two, but three separate versions showcasing increasing displacement and further lightening. These began life with a 415 hp 3.6 liter flat-six, which two years later was replaced with a 3.8 liter flat-six producing 450 hp. It was assumed that would be the end and yet very late in the 997’s model life whispers began about one more version: a 4.0 liter flat-six pushing 500 hp. The numbers seem impossible. 500 hp from a relatively small package all directed to the rear wheels and all without the benefit of forced induction. This is truly engineering excellence.
