1976 BMW 2002

While BMW was pulling out of the doldrums in the 1960s, few could have predicted that the 2002 would have been their sales savior well into the next decade. And so it went with the 2002’s replacement, the 3 series. This would be the bread and butter vehicle for BMW for years to come. By the time the 2002 was ready to retire, it had become saddled with the accoutrements of ever changing safety and emissions features for the US market, but it still offered the same honest charm that drew many aspiring folks to this brand in the first place. This example for sale in Oregon, while without documentation, has had a host of work done to it and looks to be representative of one of those storied West Coast survivors that East Coasters like me dream about.

1976 Mercedes-Benz 450SLC with 54k miles

While the R107 Mercedes-Benz is fast becoming the quintessential classic Mercedes-Benz, it’s hardtop sibling, the C107 SLC coupe has been relegated to a bit of obscurity in the annals of automotive history. It was a curious offering, a large Mercedes coupe based off the smaller SL roadster. I always wondered what would have became of the SLC if Mercedes developed it fully to the end of the R107 run, but with the introduction of the SEC coupe in 1982, it was not to be. This 1976 450SLC is a one family owned car and smack dab in the middle of the production run. With just over 54,000 miles on the clock, this is one to watch.

1976 BMW 530i with 53,000 Miles

It may sound crazy, but there was actually a point in time when items like “automatic” and “fuel injection” were enough of a headline grabber to mount badges to the outside of your car. It was a sign that you had arrived, that you were driving a luxury automobile. Yet take a look at this BMW; most of the accoutrements we’re used to seeing in the cars from Bavaria are notably absent. Automatic seats? Not likely here. Automatic mirrors? No, you’ll need to adjust before you leave – especially on a cool day. Speaking of those cool days, take a look at the doors – notice anything odd? How about manual crank windows! As an enthusiast and having owned older cars, I find these things particularly exciting, if for no other reason than there’s less to go wrong. Check out this excellent condition E12:

Motorsport Mondays: Dueling ex-Turbo 911s – RSR v. LS7

In the days when 930s were a tad bit more affordable than they’ve become in recent years, it wasn’t uncommon to see blown-engine examples be turned into track creations. It makes a fair amount of sense – with upgrades brakes and wider flares, the Turbo model was a natural born track car. So with that in mind, we have two very different routes that seemingly similar cars could take; both based upon Turbo models, which is your track-flavored style? First we’ll look at the 3.6 flat-6 RSR-styled PCA racer:

1976 Porsche 911S Coupe

The used-car market can be funny sometimes. Certain models, for any number of reasons, end up under appreciated and sell for significantly less value than similar models. And in this case we aren’t talking about a comparison of rare models to base models, but rather a short stretch of model years. Here we have an Ice Green Metallic 1976 Porsche 911S Coupe, located in North Carolina, with 122,486 miles. With an asking price of $37,000 it is being offered for significantly less money than a pre-1974 911 and, given the rapid appreciation of the 911SC and 3.2 Carrera, less than the cost of most any classic 911. To be fair, there are reasons for this lack of love: these models were the first to feature the impact bumpers, the engines were somewhat hampered by emissions equipment, and early models tended to have engine issues. Yet, this remains an air-cooled 911 in a truly fantastic color that is both period correct and very rare, and given the mileage and apparent care we should feel confident the engine is stout. While the market may not love the variants of the 1974-1977 911 that does not mean they aren’t still good cars worthy of our attention.
