1977 BMW 530i

If the E28 defined BMW as the defact mid-range sports sedan manufacturer, it was the E12 that established the trend. There’s a beautiful simplicity to the original Paul Bracq design; it is both stately and organic, subtle and understated but strong and elegant. The 5-series announced that you had arrived in a distinctly more sporty manner than the Audi 100 or Mercedes W123. Unfortunately, unlike the W123, it’s become exceedingly difficult to find good examples of the E12 – especially when you wind the clock back to the U.S. thermal-reactor 530i. Many suffered death by mechanical disregard or worse yet the ignominious death by tin worm. That’s why it’s especially awesome to see one pop up in fantastic shape, such as this 1977 Topaz Brown model that was spotted by our reader John via Daily Turismo.

1977 Porsche 930

An early Porsche 930 is a truly special vehicle, not just for its sheer performance but for its development and ultimate showcase of what Porsche was capable of producing. While initially intended to follow in the footsteps of the Carrera RS as a lightened 911 designed to meet homologation requirements, plans for the 930 shifted as those requirements changed and the car became an opportunity for Porsche to produce a car that melded a high degree luxury with blistering performance. Porsche could now compete with the likes of Ferrari. During the early years, from 1975-1977, the 930 changed little featuring a turbocharged 3.0 flat-six mated to a 4-speed manual transmission. The greatest change then came in 1978 when displacement was increased to 3.3 liters and an intercooler was integrated into the redesigned spoiler. My preference, purely from an aesthetic point of view, has always been for the 3.0 liter cars for the simple reason that the whale tail fits the lines of the car almost perfectly, while the tea-tray of the 3.3 liter cars looks slightly clunky. It’s a minor difference, but one that always stands out to me. The example here comes from that early 3.0 liter period: a rare sunroof delete, European, Grand Prix White 1977 Porsche 930, located in Los Angeles, with 21,787 miles on it.

1977 Mercedes-Benz 450SL

The 1970s were generally seen as a pretty harsh time for the automobile. It was the end of the era for large American sedans with big V8s under the hood and muscle cars. Consumers in the US turned to a myriad of imported subcompact cars to combat ever rising fuel prices. Things stayed fairly consistent at Mercedes-Benz, with exception of some larger bumpers and lighting differences as compared to their European market counterparts. Through it all, from 1972 to 1989, there was one car that defined the brand, the R107 SL roadster. Whether it was cruising the Sunset Strip or going on a weekend jaunt to The Hamptons, the SL was the car to be seen in during that era. I generally prefer the later 300SL and 560SL variants, but this 1977 450SL for sale in California has caught my attention. For the mileage, the car presents very well and the Anthracite Grey over black MB-tex livery gives it an almost timeless vibe.

Motorsports Monday: 1977 Porsche 911S RS Tribute

Like the M3 from earlier, the Carrera RS has been a model that is the dream of many Porsche enthusiasts and the subject of many replicas. Some are merely cosmetic, others go for wild and exacting recreations. But the value of 911s has progressed to the point where something interesting is happening; track cars now make a viable option to convert back to street cars. It wouldn’t surprise me if we see the same thing occur with the E30 M3 market where tracked out original M3s get converted back to street cars. But this later 911S has been given the RS treatment by notable builder Musante Motorsports. I had the pleasure to work with Chris Musante before his business was fully off the ground; his attention to detail and knowledge of building Porsche air-cooled motors is certainly top of the field, and an early 911 that Chris just rebuilt recently won the Lime Rock Vintage Festival show. It’s no surprise then that this 1977 model that Musante Motorsports built looks awesome:

E24 Face-Off: 630CSi vs. 633CSi vs. 635CSi

As the 2002we featured yesterday was getting ready to ride into the sunset, another two-door BMW chapter was just beginning: the E24 6 series. Today we’ll look at a trio of E24sm beginning with this early 630CSi for sale in Texas. While I generally am a fan of the later E24s, early models such as this one in a decidedly period metallic green have a strange way of drawing me in.
