1982 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia

As I head up to Sonoma for a weekend of NASCAR, I get to indulge in another incongruous-but-fun journey, loading M5 up with camping gear and parking it next to trucks, campers, and RVs. It even gets a few nods and smiles among this very different type of car enthusiast, but staying in a tent surrounded by generators leaves a little to be desired. This is a long way of saying yet again that I very much want a campervan to increase the efficiency and comfort of my roadtrips. Today we have an earlier but very nice Vanagon, in the exact color as my brother’s non-Westy van. It’s only adventured 84k miles in its 3+ decades and has had some recent maintenance that indicates it could go as many years and a lot more miles. It has a few needs but the cleanliness in undeniable and with no reserve, it could be a good deal relative to most clean Westies.

1982 Porsche 911SC Targa

Walking around the neighborhood today, I spotted a Porsche 3.2 Carrera Cabriolet. White with white Fuchs wheels, parked with its top down, it just reminded me of how great the eighties were. This was the decade of my childhood, so maybe it’s a bit extra special to me, but the 911 was a car I aspired to own. Hopefully one day I can fulfill that dream, but as air cooled 911s increase in value, I feel like I’m running after the last train leaving the station. It’s been noted that one of the best air cooled 911s for newbies to the Porsche brand is the 911SC.

The 911SC represented a leap in terms of reliability, with the improved 3.0 liter engine and improved rust proofing over the preceding 2.7 model. The SCs used to be rather affordable, but like the rest of the air-cooled 911 lot, they are climbing in value. This low mileage 911SC Targa with only 55k miles on it is no exception.

Heap of the Week: 1982 Audi Coupe GT

For quite some time, the B2 Audi was nearly forgotten with the exception of the quattro models. But in recent years, more appreciation has grown for the front wheel drive GT model. Indeed, in its day the Audi GT was considered by motoring magazines to be one of the best handling cars available, and having spent a the best part of two decades with one I have to agree. The Giugiaro design was one of the more subtle but also elegant designs from Audi, with great proportions and really neat details – in particular, the sweeping angular C pillar design and 3/4 view on the GTs is one of my favorite. Because they remained unappreciated for so long, though, unlike the E30 BMW crowd it’s now quite hard to find one in good shape – especially true of the earlier models. However, one restoration candidate has popped up on Ebay and appears to be worth saving:

Diamond in the Rough: 1982 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia

I’ve gone on and on about the extreme prices Westfalias command, especially the gorgeous examples we usually feature here. Today I’m going in a slightly different direction, as this Westy is being sold by someone who knows nothing about VWs in general and is an opportunity for someone to make a lot of money. It’s a standard Westfalia that is pretty rough around the edges; the interior and exterior need some love, and its engine swap goes in the reverse direction we usually see, backwards to a an old VW Pancake of unspecified capacity instead of a bigger VW, Subaru, or Zetec motor. For all these faults, however, if you’re looking for a project, this is one that would be fun, has a myriad of parts available, and could likely be sold for a profit.

1982 Porsche 911SC Targa

Continuing in the vein of yesterday’s post of a no-reserve, driver-quality, 911 Carrera, here we have a 1982 Porsche 911SC Targa also on auction with no reserve, though with around half the mileage of yesterday’s car. The 3.2 Carrera showed incremental changes from the 911SC in regard to everything other than the engine and even the engine differences are small enough relative to modern cars to render them less significant when looking for a classic 911. Choosing between the two models, in many ways, comes down to finding a well-maintained example in the color and style of your preference. This Guards Red Targa offers plenty of aesthetic differences relative to yesterday’s Meteor Grey Carrera, but should still come at a reasonable value and provide for ample driving thrills with the added benefit of open-top motoring.
