1983 Mercedes-Benz Unimog

$_57

I love the Unimog for its massive capability as a work truck – but also its general insanity as a road-legal vehicle. Today’s 1983 U1500 model (square cab, short wheelbase) was restored in 2000 to the state we see today. The Gumby-green is a playful choice, with the side graphics and hilariously large tires conspiring to help this resemble a childhood toy of mine. It’s a bit of a reverse-mullet, all party up front with the color and laughable size, but serious business out back with a bed that doesn’t just dump backwards, but in three directions. Though very clean and well cared for, it’s also ready to rumble – be that in the mud, shipping yards, or apparently an odd automobile-themed birthday party, according to the pictures. The one hangup for all of that business and pleasure is a pricetag way above the usual (albeit older) Unimog’s we see.

1983 Porsche 911SC Targa

This is not déjà vu. Last week we featured this Guards Red 911SC Targa mostly to highlight an available option for those looking for a good quality driver and/or their first opportunity to try out a 911 without breaking the bank. The car we see here, an India Red 1983 Porsche 911SC Targa with 85,667 miles on it, falls into a similar category. The 1983 911SC generally is a good bet for those looking for value as it’s the last year prior to the introduction of the 3.2 Carrera, which tends to command a slight premium, so you get the most 911SC for your buck. This one is also helped by having my personal favorite interior: Cork Leather.

1983 Volkswagen Rabbit L Diesel

Survivors are a mixed bag; for whatever reason, it seems that most often it’s not the most desirable cars that pop up as survivors but the more odd, off color base models that appear. A few weeks ago I looked at a 1989 Volkswagen Golf GL; clean, original, and rare to see these days, it’s unfortunately not the car most are looking for. Back up a generation to the Rabbits, though, and more people seem interested in them. Perhaps it’s because few remain in clean, original shape – or perhaps it’s because they have more character than the second generation Golf. Either way, there’s no denying the charm of seeing a now 32 year old Rabbit looking like it just rolled out of a dealer service area in 1987:

1983 Mercedes-Benz 380SEC – REVISIT

The clean looking 1983 Mercedes-Benz 380SEC from back in November has reappeared on eBay, this time with a “Buy It Now” of $6,450. As last time it was a reserve auction, we at least now know what the seller is hoping to get out of this big coupe. To me, while the 560SEC may be more fun and the 500SEC Euro cars slightly more attractive, overall this is a nice period package for a reasonable sum and looks like a good way to get into a classic and pretty reliable Mercedes-Benz!

1983 Porsche 911SC Coupe

Typically, a post featuring a 1983 911SC will highlight its melding of classic design, reliability and performance with the reasonable value that these 911s tend to command. As the last year of 911SC production the 1983MY tends to be an especially good candidate for such illustrations. This post will not feature sure a car. Rather, here we have an immaculate Guards Red 1983 Porsche 911SC Coupe, located in Southern California, with only 36,770 miles and a fairly high asking price. While the market for the 3.2 Carrera has accelerated across the board over the past year, values for the SC have increased at a much more gradual pace. We have, however, seen some excellent examples command higher values, while the higher-mileage, less-pristine, examples have held steady on the lower end on the scale.
