Deja-2: 1989 and 1991 Porsche 944 S2s, plus a 1987 944S for good measure!

As Yogi Berra famously said, it’s deja-vu all over again. If you missed the opportunity to jump in with the two 944 S2s I wrote up last week, you’ve got another opportunity this week, plus one for good luck. Again today we’ve got two of the S2s, in Graphite and Glacier Blue, and a golden 87 944S 16V as well. Perhaps one of these will strike your fancy? Let’s start with the newest:

1986 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia

DSC09466

Westfalias and Syncros go for insane money (especially when it’s both), as I have documented here over the past few years. Today’s Westy reminds me of the one my friends’ family had, down to the perfect Wolfram Grey Metallic. A new 2.1l and a clean Westy interior make this a quietly hot commodity. The asking price is Westy-high, but it’s been loved for its 98k and makes me rethink my recent appreciation for solo life and desire some little kids to show the country to.

Tuner Tuesday: 1987 Audi Quattro Treser

Need something to tow with your recently acquired Audi Service Van? What better item than a proper Audi Quattro. But this isn’t just any Quattro – not that they’re particularly common in any event. No, this is one of the uber-rare Treser cars. Treser cars are certainly polarizing, and much like the extreme tuners of the day such as DP and Koenig the Treser cars look pretty dated now. However, when they’re well presented they still look neat, a glimpse into a time period that many want to forget. Apparently, this seller wanted to forget it so much he reverted this Treser to it’s original Audi panels. For that, most of us are thankful:

1987 Porsche 928S4

There’s been cars throughout history that have been way ahead of their time. The Chrysler Airflow, Citroën DS and NSU Ro80 are but a few examples of vehicles that were revolutionary in their time and, at least in the case of the Citroen and NSU, look almost modern to this day. At first, I thought this Porsche 928 was an early 1990s example, but this was a first year example of the 928S4, a 1987 model for sale in St. Louis. Just think, for a moment, about the cars that were hanging around on the showroom floor in 1987. The Mercedes-Benz R107 SL was still alive and kicking, as was the Volkswagen Quantum. Branch out past German iron, and you could still order a brand new AMC Eagle. Park this similar vintage 928S4 next to any of these cars and it’s easy to mistake it from another era, let alone a vehicle introduced in the late 1970s.

Euro-looker: 1987 BMW 535is

When people think “E28”, they immediately think “M5” – those two combinations of letters and numbers are both magical and intertwined in the history of performance sedans. Indeed, like the original GTi defined the hot hatch segment and has always been at the forefront since, the M5 has similarly defined fast executive sedans. However, I’m going to let you in on a little secret – 20 years on, it’s pretty expensive to own and run the S38 motor in the M5. There is no doubt it’s a screamer, but for most people, a warmed over 535is is probably a better option; they look nearly identical to the M5, they get better fuel mileage, around town they’re practically as fast as the M5, and critically they’re usually had in good condition for less than half the asking price of the M5 and are cheaper to run, to boot. On top of that, you could get them in colors other than black – not something everyone wants, but for those not really into the Model T scene it’s a welcome addition. Today’s 535 is a excellent case in point; looking quite catching in red with Euro bits complementing the original shape of the E28 and with a very inviting looking black sport interior, this 1987 535is sure is a looker:
