1988 Porsche 928S4

If you’re looking for something that combines luxury and speed in one package, you don’t have to look too hard today. Maserati is back in the game with two four-door models, Mercedes-Benz is cranking out AMG sedans at a good clip and even Porsche jumped into the segment with the Panamera. But before the Panamera, the Porsche 928 made a name for itself as the penultimate choice for those in need of fast, executive transport. Sure, it only had two doors, but it had plenty of space and loading practicality for a long distance weekend jaunt along with modern day levels of oomph from the V8 up front. This 928S4 for sale in California was originally purchased in New York and has been lovingly cared for over the 55,000 miles it has covered.

Tuner Tuesday: 1988 Porsche 911 Turbo Ruf BTR 3.4

Here’s the question of the day: do you need an original? Perhaps, if you have quite particular taste and your pockets are quite deep, yes is the only option for you. Perhaps you don’t feel like you could possibly turn up for a track event, coffee and cars, or club car show and explain to people that your pride and joy is a replica or car that was converted in the style of the originals. But to me, if it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and – as in this case – goes like a duck, perhaps it doesn’t matter that it didn’t leave the egg as a prized duckling. Ruf cars are some of the most highly sought tuner cars ever produced – and these days, a real-deal Ruf BTR will set you back a pretty penny; but then, so will a mint condition 930. 930s have recently undergone a serious spike in prices; perhaps recognition by the market that they’re a lot more car than a E30 M3 and probably should be priced below one. So what we have here is a great looking 930 that has been given a host of BTR upgrades by an authorized Ruf dealer. Is it worth the price of entry?

Low-mileage 1988 BMW 528e

The long, low and mean add-ons of the 535is and M5 are what initially drew me to the E28, but after having spent so much time with it admiring the unique lines I find myself caught by even the most bunk examples. Yesterday a car in my mirror caught my eye, a car that came out of the factory exactly like this one. As it passed, I was a little sad that the paint was entirely sun-damaged, but still sent the owner some “I like that you drive an E28!” vibes.

While that car showed a hard life left in the sun, this car has no such history. Inside and out, this tan-on-tan base model 5er looks like we’re still waiting for the 90s to arise (or sink in, rather…). It’s yet another example of how nice it can be to soak in a completely original and well cared-for 80s car even when it’s not the rarest or fastest. This is certainly neither of those things, with the efficiency-before-power Eta engine and a slush box, but it would still be a joy to drive and own.

Tuner Tuesday: 1988 Porsche 911 Targa DP935 – REVISIT

Now primed for summer, the 1988 Porsche 911 Targa DP 935 Slantnose we wrote up earlier this year is still for sale. In the world of original DP cars, this is a bit of an oddity, but also more affordable than most of its turbocharged brothers. Will it leave you seeing red?

1988 Porsche 944 Turbo S with 39,000 miles

Like earlier’s M Roadster post, if you’ve missed out on the E30 market and are looking for a collectable classic, another car with serious potential over the coming few years is the 944 Turbo. Lagging (no pun intended) behind some of its contemporaries in increasing values, most decent 944 Turbos can still be had for under $15,000, and very good examples can be found up to around $20,000. However, if you want the best of the bunch, you’ll save your lunch money for the 1988 Turbo S, or the S-spec 1989 Turbo. I’ve written many times about how these are performance bargains, much as they were back in the day when they were new. However, if you’ve been watching the trend, these turbos have certainly been on the uptick over the recent few years, following cars like the E30, 911, Quattro, M5 and M6 upwards. Today’s example is one of the more desirable 88 Turbo S cars; presented in Maraschino Red Metallic, it’s in stunning original condition with very low miles:
