As my E28 sits in the shop for some serious work, I’ve been reexamining the haste with which I jumped into an almost 200k-mile 80s BMW. Would I have been wiser to heed the common cries (often my own!) of “buy low mileage, save the headaches!” I’m young and dumb, but more than that, I was excited about having a rebuild already taken care of and having a car I could drive without reservation. If I were a little older and a little wiser (and had a bigger bank account), I’d probably go for lower mileage, but 80s BMWs will most likely be seriously expensive at that point. So jump in while you can folks, and snag the good ones. This 104k-mile M6 appears to be one of the good ones.

It takes a bit for me to be interested in writing up E30 M3s. Maybe it’s the popularity, or the expensive-and-rising values, but the topic seems a bit overcooked these days. Today’s is an interesting package though, matching the common S52 swap with the E46’s 6-speed manual, all wrapped in a very clean and stock body with a cleanly redone interior. Pretty complete for those who don’t care about the technicalities of being all-original but love ///M with a passion. This is about the most attractive modified E30 M3 I’ve seen in a while, and it’s price is accordingly ridiculous.

6 CommentsFor any prospective buyer of a classic 911 there inevitably comes a decision to be made about whether to get a 911SC or a 3.2 Carrera. These cars share enough similarities that in some cases a buyer may decide based simply upon availability. These are, after all, 30-year-old cars so the numbers of excellent examples are dwindling. But what if a good example of each is available, nearly identical in appearance and for similar cost? Now the decision-making process becomes a bit more difficult and it’s precisely the dilemma we feature here: a 1979 Porsche 911SC with 29,900 miles and a 1988 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe with 57,750 miles. 1 CommentThe Porsche 930 has always been a personal favorite as it was the performance variant predominantly available during my youth. The performance and aesthetics both held a certain wildness that few cars could replicate without us moving well into supercar territory. At some point, it’d be fantastic to own one, but prices on these cars are on the rise, especially for an example that remains in good condition. The car featured here looks to be one of the lowest mileage I’ve come across and appears nearly pristine inside and out. Here we have a 1988 Porsche 930 located in Florida that has seen a scant 4042 miles and comes in what I’m guessing is Marine Blue, though the seller lists it simply as “Blue”. Either way, it’s a fantastic color that stands apart from the standard colors while providing the subtlety some owners might desire.

3 CommentsOkay, call it wishful thinking, but as the “white stuff” descends on New England I think it’s a great opportunity to look at a the perfect winter car – an all-white Volkswagen Cabriolet. By perfect car, of course I mean it’s the perfect car to hide in a snowbank and dream of a warmer climate. Plus, the wheels are affectionately known as “Snowflakes”! In all seriousness, these Cabriolets soldiered on long after their Mk.1 brethren had been replaced by the second generation Golf. It wasn’t necessarily laziness on the part of Volkswagen, but a testament to the lasting appeal of this not-so-cheap but cheery convertible. Of course, if you were “Daddy’s girl” in the 1980s you were probably destined for an automatic version of today’s triple-white “Molly Ringwald” edition Cabriolet, but thankfully this example has an more fun to drive manual:
