High mileage BMW E30s: 325is vs. 325es

$_57 (4)

A new hunt of mine is finding affordable E30s with solid potential. The cleanest of the quintessential sports sedan have become quite valuable, but there are still some reasonable examples lurking out there. The “s” models, in both “eta” and standard “i” form, provide outstanding handling with varying levels of power. One path for finding inexpensive classics is being open to high-mileage survivors, of which we have two today. Both have well above 200k miles and the “s” package, but one has the venerable 2.5 liter inline-6 while the other comes with the larger-and-slower 2.7l of the 325e. E30s are ripe for many engine swaps, from stock to extreme, so buying a low-price, high-mileage example provides a great foundation for a project.

Motorsports Monday: 1990 Porsche 944S2 Firehawk – REVISIT

The 1990 Porsche 944S2 Firehawk series car that I wrote up back in early August is back on eBay, having failed to sell its first time around. The price has been lowered $2,000 this time, but it remains pricey by 944S2 and track car standards at $23,100. That amount does buy you a solid race car platform with an interesting history with the look of a Turbo Cup car, but I’d guess it’s still a bit too expensive for most people’s blood. If it could be had in the mid to high teens I’d think there would be more interested parties.

Fan Favorites: 1990 Audi Coupe, 1991 Audi V8 3.6 quattro 5-speed and 1995 Audi S6 Avant

Audi fans are an interesting bunch. To be fair, I think that most devoted followers of a specific brand in any circumstance are an interesting bunch, but knowing the Audi folks a bit I’m closer to the understanding. What I find interesting is that there’s such a schism between the model fans and who they attract. Each has a devoted following, and each of those groups is a microcosm in and of itself. Take my model group, for example – the Type 85. In that model group, there are the three major notables: the 4000 quattro, the Coupe GT, and of course the Quattro. Then within each of those subsets, there are further fan specializations; 84 4000S quattro versus the 85-87; early GT versus 85-87 and then the “87.5” crew; and of course each one of the model years of the Quattro has its followers. As with the GT, Audi fans have come to naming half model years to differentiate the upgrades; 87.5 GTs received a revised engine and brakes along with some other minor details, but then there are “95.5” S6s and “2001.5” S4s; heck, there are even “2005.5” S4s. Fans become semi-obsessed with differentiating each of the subset models and what makes them special. Today, though, seeing any of these cars in great shape is special to me – and these three each have their special fan base. Thanks to our reader John, here’s a roundup of three fan favorites that are sure to make some smile:

1990 Volkswagen Corrado G60

Last month, Carter featured an impossibly clean Corrado SLC with very low mileage. A lot of these sport coupes were snapped up by young enthusiasts a few years on and sadly were modified beyond recognition. I remember frequenting Volkswagen shows during my college years and seeing many of these cars chopped up, driven hard and laid up wet. Now two decades since the last Corrados were sold new in the US, a good one is hard to come by. This silver, one-owner Corrado G60 for sale in Connecticut is fairly original with little modification but has high mileage. The G60 isn’t the more desirable powerplant in the model lineup, but given the condition, this car is sure to catch its fair share of attention.

1990 Volkswagen Cabriolet with 22k miles

With prices of certain German classics on the rise, it’s easy to get dismayed, but there are still plenty of vehicles out there within reach for the enthusiast of more modest means. Case in point, the Volkswagen Cabriolet. The Mk1 Cabriolet had a particularly long production life, from 1980 through 1993, so you won’t have trouble sourcing one on the used market. Later examples, like this low mileage 1990 example for sale in Florida, came equipped with a few more niceties, such as power windows, a glass rear window, body colored bumpers and a driver’s side airbag.
