Feature Listing: 1994 Audi S4

They say lightning doesn’t strike twice, but we know that to be a fallacy. It’s just extremely unlikely for it to strike twice in the same spot – an improbability along the lines of finding two extraordinarily clean, original and unmolested Audi S4s from the same seller. Heck, let’s increase the probability slightly and remove the “same seller” part – it’s still quite unlikely to find two clean S4s for sale within a few weeks of each other. That’s not because the S4 is unloved – quite the opposite indeed, the S4 has remained one of the absolute Audi essentials for a large number of the four ringed fans. First, there was the aerodynamic C4 chassis; quiet, refined, luxurious and not at all ostentatious, it’s a good looking sedan that was arguably far ahead of its time compared to the competition from Germany in 1992. The S4 took that basic platform a step farther with subtle but certain fender flares covering one of the best looking wheels ever fit to an Audi, the Fuchs made 16″ x 8″ with meaty 225 section tires. The headlights were upgraded to projector-beam units with integrated fog lights, a change that would carry over to the A6 later. Inside the S4 also received a smart sport interior; the seats were a step up from the older sport seats and featured heavy bolsters and plenty of electric adjustability. But the true genius of the C4 lay at its heart where few saw; a stout all-wheel drive system featuring a Torsen center differential and electronically locking rear differential, the C4 was the next in a long line of over-built Audis. The engine also wasn’t entirely new, but it was understressed from the factory and subsequent years of boosted bliss later, the AAN engine is capable of not only stratospheric power levels but improbable longevity as well. There are many that argue that this was the best all-around Audi ever made and for good reason. Despite that, as we’ve seen, it remains likely the best performance value of any German marque – if you can find a good one:

1994 Porsche 911 RS America

After what seemed like a run of RS Americas back in the Fall, it has now been a while since we have featured one so why not check back in on what was a rapidly accelerating market for these special 964s. The RS America, of course, was Porsche’s answer to US demand for something akin to the 964 Carrera RS. Based on the Carrera 2, the RS America shared the same powerplant and gearbox with other 964 models, but was lightened through a basic stripping of the interior, including the removal of the rear seats, and then fitted with sport suspension and whale tail. They were never really intended as a full replication of the European Carrera RS, but still provided buyers a Carrera 2 with far fewer luxuries and thus lighter overall weight. Available in only a small range of colors, with the majority produced in Black, White, or Red, here we have one of the optional colors: a Midnight Blue Metallic 1994 Porsche RS America, located in California, with 52,987 miles on it that appears to have been fitted with three of the four available options: A/C, sunroof, and radio.

1994 Porsche 911 Turbo 3.6 X88 X99 package – 1 of 2

On to our second special 911 for the day. A few months ago we featured this 3.6 Turbo S ‘Package Car’ and I remarked in that post that my own personal Holy Grail would be the 1 Speed Yellow Turbo S produced for the US market. Well, this isn’t that car, but it is very similar and about as close as you can get without actually stumbling across the lone example to have been produced. Here we have a 1994 Porsche 911 Turbo 3.6, which crucially has been fitted with both the X88 engine option that came on the Turbo S and also the X99 option package with the Turbo S rear fender vents. Of the 51 reported Turbo 3.6 models also to have been fitted with the X88 engine only 3 possessed the additional X99 package, 2 of which were produced in Speed Yellow. This is one of those two. These differ in appearance from a true Package car by their lack of the Turbo S front and rear spoilers, but in all other regards they are identical and were the only way to get a non-flatnose Turbo S outside of the US market (excepting the Japanese market Slantnose).

1994 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Widebody

Porsche has made a habit – and a good habit at that – of using the final model year of any 911 to release a few special variants to send the model off with a bang. The cynics might say that Porsche is simply trying to push every last chassis (and squeeze every last dollar) onto the market, but even if that’s the case those final model years have provided some fantastic machines. Here we have one such final-year make: a Midnight Blue Metallic 1994 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Widebody with 61K miles on it. The Carrera 4 itself first debuted with the 964 in the narrow-body design standard to most any naturally-aspirated 911. For its final production year Porsche stretched those rear fenders to give it the Turbo-look appearance. In the right shades, these can be some of the best looking 911s you’re likely to come across.

30 Years of the W124 – A Tribute

Thirty years have passed since the introduction of the W124 Mercedes-Benz E-class range. This is a car that had big shoes to fill, as the W123 range was beloved the world over for its quality, durability and rock solid diesel engines. Arriving in the middle of the 1980s, this new mid-sized Mercedes designed by Bruno Sacco brought the company’s traditional styling hallmarks into a new era. This car would spawn coupe, cabriolet and estate variants as well as introduce four-wheel drive as an option and a few high performance V8 variants. The W124 would carry on into the mid-1990s, succeeded by the W210 E-class with its radical four-headlamp front profile.

Since we’re in the middle of winter in many parts of the US, we’ll start off by looking at this 1991 300E 4Matic for sale in California offered at no reserve.
