Tuner Tuesday: 1996 BMW M3 LS1

Why do I like posting American V8 swaps to German cars? Well, in part it’s because they’re a fantastic performance value. In dollar per horsepower produced, it’s just downright hard to beat a package like the GM “LS” line. Yes, they’re a blunt tool compared to the precision work that typically characterized the stock motors the original car came with – but sometimes, you just need or want a big hammer. The “LS” wasn’t just a a unintelligent lump of iron, though – with aluminum construction, they’re often lighter than the engines that they replace. Two of the favorite chassis to stick these engines in are two of the best regarded, best handling chassis out of the box that enthusiasts love to modify – the Porsche 944 Turbo and the BMW M3:

1996 Porsche 911 Turbo

There is a lot going on with the 993 Turbo. As the last of the air-cooled 911 Turbos it will always exist in the rarefied air that enthusiasts reserve for only their most hallowed cars. But, just as Porsche was saying goodbye to one piece of technology it was bringing on board another: the 993 Turbo was the first to receive all-wheel drive as standard, a feature that has remained standard on every Turbo since, with the exception of the ultra-low production GT2. That places these cars in an interesting position and while I feel its status as the last of the air-cooled turbos will ultimately win the day I still wonder (and I’ve said this before) how the market for these and the 964 Turbos will shake out long term. Only time will tell in that regard, though either way I think it’s safe to say that both models will remain highly sought after. The example we see here is a Black 1996 Porsche 911 Turbo, located in Arizona, with Red leather interior and only 24,500 miles.

1996 Mercedes-Benz Unimog

Most of the Unimogs we write up are from the 60s and 70s due to ease of import and cost. They’re still capable but have interiors like the old Willys Jeep we used to have as an island bruiser. Fond memories of bouncing around and sore elbows indeed! Today’s Mog has come a little ways inside and looks similar to all the other drab-green examples we’ve seen, but a slightly modernized grill hints at much newer running gear. Unfortunately, the cost for this newer 90s model is not just higher monetarily, but also brings the inability to register it for the road in the US. Canadians can rejoice or Americans can plan on having it as a badass farm vehicle, but part of the allure of the Mog for me would be to see the terrified looks on passing motorists’ faces as I towered above them. Alas, the price demands this Unimog be seen as a useful truck as opposed to an awesome toy.

Citron Coupes: 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera & 1996 Porsche Carrera 4S

Yellow is a color more akin to some Italian exotics, but occasionally you’ll come across some of Stuttgart’s finest in this eye-popping hue. Porsche produced a number of different yellows over the years, and here are two air-cooled examples slathed in this bright shade. First up is a 1987 911 Coupe in Summer Yellow for sale in Florida.

Tuner Tuesday: 1996 Volkswagen Golf Supercharged Harlequin Replica

Pretty much everyone knows that Volkswagen enthusiasts are a special breed, but even within Volkswagen enthusiasts there are some really devoted fans of a particular sub-model. One such example of this is the Golf Harlequin, seemingly a joke by Volkswagen dealers to get rid of excess body panels. In truth, it’s one of the really neat exercises by a major that reinforces my belief that Volkswagen just does things differently than most other manufacturers. Seriously, could you imagine Mercedes-Benz shipping a bunch of S-Classes out to dealers in different colors and telling them to swap body panels around? The Harlequin Golf was and remains a neat page in Volkswagen history that generally brings a smile to VW fans. So, it’s no surprise that the Harlequins are very sought after, even if they appear all in one color because the dealer was lazy – no joke! But are they sought after enough to warrant a replica?
