Ministerial Transport: 1997 Mercedes-Benz S420 & 1995 Mercedes-Benz S320

As much as world leaders bang on about climate change and conservation, what is it that we typically see in the car park at the G7 Summit? Big black sedans. With security for heads of state of utmost importance, it’s easier to pack in a bunch of armor and defense systems into a car like the Audi A8 of German Chancellor Angela Merkel than it is a Toyota Prius. The consummate state limousine for many nations has always been one car: the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The 1990s saw the chains move for this perennial favorite, growing larger in almost every dimension with a new V12 engine on offer and a myriad of electronically assisted accessories. The following two black W140 sedans represent the lower end of what was on offer in the US market, each with low mileage. We’ll start with this 1997 S420 for sale in Texas.

1997 Porsche 911 Targa

Often forgotten, the 993 based Porsche 911 Targa was an interesting study in trying to move a segment forward. With a huge glass panel roof that slid inside the vehicle, the profile was changed a bit. Gone was the distinctive rounded rear side windows and a wide B pillar functioning as a roll bar. Also standard were two piece 17″ wheels to differentiate this car from the standard Carrera. For 911 sun worshippers that maybe don’t want to go the whole hog with the cabriolet, this Targa for sale in New York is a good middle ground.

1997 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe

It’s a weekend of black 911s for me and I have no problem with that. While they can sometimes seem generic, or even boring, there are few things I enjoy more than seeing a freshly cleaned, well-maintained, black sports car. Other colors are certainly more exciting, but I find few to match the seeming depth and beauty. Maintaining that appearance is a pain, but it’s definitely worth it. Here we have an example that could certainly pass as generic, but when you pause to take everything in you really begin to see the depth of the 993’s fantastic curves. With 69,067 miles this 1997 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe is the ideal sort of candidate for someone looking to own a 993, but without concern over increased mileage spoiling the car’s value.

1997 BMW 318ti M-Sport

It seems like just yesterday I was writing up a clean 318ti M-sport. The condition was great on that particular example; miles were lower, it was all original and the color was nice. But there were several drawbacks, too – the California roof, while cool, was noted by one of our readers as a potential problem spot. Then there was the transmission; an automatic, it robbed a fair amount of the sport and fun out of the package. To top it off, there was the asking price – a staggering $13,000. As if to answer every single one of those points, another near-mint example of the rare to see M-Sport package has popped up this week; conventional sunroof, lower price and thank heavens a manual gearbox are the highlights here:

1997 BMW 528i 5-speed manual

Last night I had a conversation with a friend in the market for a new mid-sized luxury sedan. After a lot of back and forth, I realized something that has been plaguing me with most new cars lately: there’s just not much out there that speaks to me. Sure, cars on the whole are more reliable and feature-laden then they ever have been these days, but there’s a bit of uniqueness that is lacking, along with a general disappearance of engagement in the driving experience that has perpetuated across the landscape as of late.

The E39 BMW 5 series is a bit of a touchstone for many enthusiasts, as they remember it as the last of the greats before more abstract styling and electronic aids found their way into the mid-sized offering. Styling was more evolutionary rather than revolutionary and the range of engines and transmissions satisfied most every need. This 528i represents the second year of E39 production and is equipped with the 5-speed manual gearbox, making it a good choice for 5er fans who want a more spirited drive.
