The W202 C class Mercedes-Benz was the first Mercedes model officially breathed on by the tuning firm AMG. Starting as a C36 with a 3.6 liter inline six, the C36 begat the C43 in 1998. Powered by a tuned version of the 4.3 liter V8 from the E430, the C43 cranked out 302 hp which was backed up by a 5 speed automatic from the SL500 with shift points tailored towards more spirited motoring. Here’s a pretty much new example of the C43 with only 12,000 miles for sale.

As a former owner of both a W202 C230 (1998) and a W203 C230 (2007), I have to say, I preferred the W202 better. It just seemed like more of what a classic Mercedes should be about. I’ve driven many V8 powered Mercedes-Benzes over the years, but never a C43. I could imagine it would be right up my alley though; relatively small in size, big engine and tighter handling. At $25,000, this is way beyond the top end of what one would pay for any version of the W202 C class. If you want the best, though, this is probably going to be it.

1999 Mercedes-Benz C43 AMG

I continue to be inspired to research cars I see on the street. I walked past a C43 the other day and was impressed by the many little changes that give it an air of muscularity not present in the C-class until recently. Add to that the fact that it was the first V8-powered C as well as the first Mercedes to be completely assembled at AMG after Daimler gained total ownership in 1998, and this is an unassuming but rather special Benz. The 4.3 liter’s 306hp is tame by today’s insane nuclear-proliferation style power wars, but when you realize that it’ll do 181 miles per hour when delimited, it becomes clear just how adequate that much power can be.

The C-class is often overlooked when it comes to AMG badassness, but reviewing the numbers for this car makes me think that a Buy-it-Now of less than $10k, and with just 74k miles, this is a good deal. It may not be the most stylish Benz, and obviously not the fastest compared to the insane modern-day equivalent, but I’m betting even M-Bs invasive traction control can’t stop the 4.3 from having some fun with rear tires. I’d be interested to hear if anyone knows of reliability problems with these, but I’m guessing the V8 is plenty robust, giving this C43 the potential for a lot of fun miles out of the AMG bargain bin.

Unpretentious Street/track E36 M3 for cheap

The M3 coupe isn’t the one I’d have whenever a sedan is offered, but those with a penchant for the more classic sports car or track-capability would usually go for the coupe. Put it in Estoril Blue and I’m starting to be swayed. Drop the price to around $7k and I’m all ears when we’re talking M3. Today’s 1999 coupe isn’t perfect nor original, but it’s a nicely gone-through example with an eye on sharper handling and performance.

Car has stock motor. Interior needs work if intended for street. Pass seat will need to be reupholstered. Mobil 1 motor oil used. I bought this car, built it, did one track day at Infineon Raceway and garaged it since. When I bought it I had to replace front drivers fender, nose panel and headlight. There was no structural damage. Front bumper was banged up but Ive saved it and it looks ok. Paint looks good overall. Clean title. I am probably forgetting some other parts ive installed, so ill try to update the list as i go.

What I like most about this M3 is a general lack of pretension. The owner wasn’t afraid of getting dirty and putting solid performance upgrades on everything but the motor (refreshingly backwards from most modified M3s), but also didn’t go overboard in making a “tuner car.” ┬áThis car is for use and fun. ┬áSomething about the track wheels and lightweight flag on the hood just work where they usually wouldn’t for me. Yeah, it’s plenty of miles on the old S50 and a few bits need attendance (passenger seat, coilovers), but it’s all above-board and priced to go. Hard to imagine a better canyon-carver or weekend tracker for $7k than this M3 coupe.
