If the R107 560SL was the expression of luxurious drop-top motoring in the late 1980s, the BMW 3-series convertible became a fixture of summer homes, sun-up top-down motoring along the coast, and adding a touch of sport to 4-seat open air drives thereafter. They’re intensely popular; I don’t live in the most convertible friendly area of the country by any means, but you can’t go much more than a few miles without seeing at least one convertible 3-series around me. They typically come in two flavors around here; look at me M3s and base model 325 or 328 models. But the E46 330 struck a balance between the two, offering a fair bit of sport without the bills associated with the M badge. Powered by the M54 to the tune of nearly 230 horsepower (even more in the ZHP package cars), the 330Ci was also a great looking car especially when equipped with the Sport Package. However, this particular example has some really specially selected options that make it one of the prettiest E46 convertibles I’ve seen in a while:

We don’t see a lot of Porsche’s Carrera GT on these pages unless one comes around that really grabs our attention. Such was the case with the last example we featured, a stunning Carrera GT painted in Lamborghini’s Aranacio Borealis. Unsurprisingly, that one came with a sky-high price. On its surface this Basalt Black 2004 Carrera GT doesn’t seem to possess quite the unique appeal of that metallic orange. And, frankly, it doesn’t. However, I can rarely recall coming across a Black Carrera GT. I know I have, but there is something about this one that takes it to another level; it possesses an aggressiveness and a level of menace sometimes found lacking in these beautiful machines. At $685K, it’s also pretty reasonably priced within the rarefied air of Carrera GTs.

3 CommentsAt the beginning of this week I featured a pretty highly modified Black 930 Slantnose Coupe that possessed a great deal of menace that would separate it from just about everything else around. The car we see here, a Black 2004 Porsche 911 GT2, might be thought of as a factory version of that aggressive 930. Relative to a 930 Slantnose the styling of the GT2 is actually pretty subdued, but mechanically there are no such limitations as these packed a serious punch with every one of their 477 horses directed only to the rear wheels. For buyers who felt disparaged by Porsche’s use of all-wheel drive in the Turbo, the GT2 provided reassurance that the marque had not gone soft. Its performance bonafides were as secure as ever, even if the GT2 was no longer needed for homologation purposes.

1 CommentThe Audi A4 Avant needs no introduction on these pages; an enthusiast favorite especially for those with families, the small wagon is a sharp looking, sporty package with plenty of practicality. Though not as numerous as the European market, there are plenty of configurations older models could be specified in too – from torquey and smooth 2.8 through 3.2 V6 models, to the whoosh-wonderful turbocharged 1.8T and 2.0T variants, there was also always the monster V6 twin turbo or V8 S4. Today we’re looking at two of the smallest engines, but that doesn’t make them less desirable. Indeed, for some Avant enthusiasts, the second of this duo – the S-Line Titanium package – might just be the best overall package Audi offered here. How does it compare to its father?
