Ultrasport Faceoff: 2005 Audi A4 1.8T quattro v. 2004 Audi A4 1.8T quattro Avant

I see B6 platform A4s all the time in DC, often driven by young people in their mid to late twenties. I tend to assume that many of them are hand-me-downs from wealthy parents who live in the affluent suburbs. When equipped with all-wheel drive, these cars make for competent year-round daily drivers ideal for the mid-Atlantic climate, and they still give off that expensive, German vibe even though by now they are relatively inexpensive to buy. But while the overall design remains attractive, I think the standard models can look a bit plain. If, like me, you prefer the sportier looks of the S4, but don’t want to deal with the possibility of the $8k timing chain job that afflicts the 4.2 V8 motor, the next best thing is a regular A4 equipped with the Ultrasport package. Available as a factory option, this added S4-style door blades, revised front and rear bumpers, sports suspension and 18″ multispoke “celebration” RS4-style wheels. So equipped, the ordinary looking A4 is instantly transformed into a sportier, more aggressively styled car. The USP package was available on both sedan and wagon models, and for today’s post I’ve written up one of each.

2005 Porsche Carrera GT – Arancio Borealis – 1 of 1

Let’s dream a little bit. Through some serendipity there happen to be a couple of very expensive – and special – Porsche supercars currently making the rounds and it seemed as good a time as any to take a break from some reasonably attainable cars and drift into the stratosphere. Over the next few days I have some very eye-catching Porsches to go through and we’ll begin with perhaps the most eye-catching of all: a 2005 Porsche Carrera GT with a metallic paint-to-sample exterior done in Arancio Borealis – I think in common parlance it’s Pearl Orange. It’s said to be 1 of 1 and I wouldn’t find that hard to believe. If a standard Carrera GT simply isn’t exciting enough from the outside this color will certainly draw all the attention you should ever desire. It sits with a mere 260 miles on the clock, with the current owner claiming to have never driven it – a situation I could not even fathom, but here we are.

2005 Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet

I’ve been on a little bit of a convertible kick this week – probably just wistfully imagining summer weather before winter fully arrives. Why not continue the trend with this Black on Black 2005 Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet, located in Florida, with 52,526 miles on it and the very desirable 6-speed manual transmission. The 997 sits in a really nice spot on the market these days, especially when considering these earlier examples. Porsche listened to many of the complaints regarding the 996’s design, particularly with regard to the headlights, and with the 997 we have a shape that is unmistakably a 911 when viewed from any angle. Admittedly, the 997 is not as curvy and sexy as the 993; on the 997 the lines have been smoothed and refined, but even if it doesn’t have the pure beauty of the 993 we’re a long way from the classic design. That’s not a knock on the classic design, but next to these modern 911s it is clear from which era each came. Add to the refined shape a 3.8 liter flat-six delivering 355 hp through a 6-speed transmission and you get a potent mix of performance and allure, but all for a price that is much lower. I would suspect given its asking price that this Carrera S would likely sell for less than the ’87 Carrera Cabriolet I featured on Monday. There are very good reasons for those price differences, but if you’re looking to drive the darn thing then the bang for your buck here is undeniable.

2005 Porsche Carrera GT

We rarely feature the Carrera GT here at GCFSB since generally speaking cars like this exist beyond the purview of our site. Even in the world of high-dollar air-cooled 911s the Carrera GT is somewhat of a different breed. A quick perusal of our archives reveals that we’ve only featured one previous example and that was nearly three years ago. So why not take a look once again? Here we have a GT Silver Metallic 2005 Porsche Carrera GT, located in Missouri, with Dark Grey leather interior and 1,765 miles on it. As an all new model, the Carrera GT clearly stood apart from the rest of the Porsche portfolio, but it drew upon enough cues that any knowledgeable observer immediately would know from which brand it had come. Its 5.7 liter V10 mounted amidship produces the greatest sound of any car I’ve encountered on the road. It doesn’t thunder, it doesn’t roar, rather it shrieks and the speed with which the revs climb adds to the ferocity of that engine note. The design is both elegant and purposeful and to my eye has aged quite well over its first decade of existence. The Carrera GT remains a rarely seen beauty though one whose impact has hardly waned with the passage of time.

2005 Mercedes-Benz C55 AMG

Orion Blue Metallic, that’s what the paint is called and the main reason I decided to write up this Mercedes-Benz C55 AMG. One of the other reasons is that I’ve always felt this car was overlooked due to the its successor being the tire slaying C63 AMG. Those cars continue to fall in pice but it will be a few more years before they reach the bottom of the depreciation curve. The C55 is already close and will likely drop down a little further in the next couple of years. If you enjoy the “double bubble” headlight style of the W203 then this car has to be at the top of your list as it is the most aggressive looking one you could buy. What I find appealing is that even in AMG form, it still retains a clean sleeper look. Were it not for the matte black Vertini wheels, I think this car would be able to fly way under the radar, a bonus when you’ve got 362 hp on tap. If I were to take this home I’d probably swap them out the wheels for a nice brushed aluminum multi spoke from the AMG catalog, but I have to admit the concave style does add a certain badass element to the car. I think that has to be one of the most appealing things about the C55 AMG, it can be made to look like a mundane country club classic or a aggressive Autobahn animal. All you need to do is change a few minor things to tip the scales in either direction and I have to say, this car strikes a nice balance between the two.
