2005 Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet

I’ve been on a little bit of a convertible kick this week – probably just wistfully imagining summer weather before winter fully arrives. Why not continue the trend with this Black on Black 2005 Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet, located in Florida, with 52,526 miles on it and the very desirable 6-speed manual transmission. The 997 sits in a really nice spot on the market these days, especially when considering these earlier examples. Porsche listened to many of the complaints regarding the 996’s design, particularly with regard to the headlights, and with the 997 we have a shape that is unmistakably a 911 when viewed from any angle. Admittedly, the 997 is not as curvy and sexy as the 993; on the 997 the lines have been smoothed and refined, but even if it doesn’t have the pure beauty of the 993 we’re a long way from the classic design. That’s not a knock on the classic design, but next to these modern 911s it is clear from which era each came. Add to the refined shape a 3.8 liter flat-six delivering 355 hp through a 6-speed transmission and you get a potent mix of performance and allure, but all for a price that is much lower. I would suspect given its asking price that this Carrera S would likely sell for less than the ’87 Carrera Cabriolet I featured on Monday. There are very good reasons for those price differences, but if you’re looking to drive the darn thing then the bang for your buck here is undeniable.

Let’s get to this specific 911. 52K miles certainly isn’t low, but it’s not too bad and is reasonable for a 10-year-old car. Given proper maintenance through its life the mileage shouldn’t be anything to be overly concerned about. One important consideration on an ’05 is IMS failure. Porsche introduced some changes beginning with the ’06MY that would significantly alleviate the issue, so those model year differences are always something to have in mind when considering a 997. Those with specific experience with these engines can chime in and if given a thorough PPI it could be the case that no issues will be found. I could be wrong (and please correct me if I am), but I would suspect that at 52K miles potential IMS issues would have begun to show themselves. Either way, these concerns may help account for what seems a very reasonable price as this Carrera S Cabriolet actually is priced below the last 997 I featured, which was a ’06 Carrera Coupe with 32K miles. All together this could make for a very nice option. It looks in good nice shape and appears well cared for. If everything checks out, then maybe there’s still a good deal of value left on the 911 market.

I’m not so sure the IMS issue would be solved; my 04 996 died at 51,000 with no advance warning, and no help from Porsche NA-

There’s so much value in the 996/997 models that I consider from time to time selling my ’84 and moving into the (relatively) modern era. I’ve no personal experience with the early water cooled 911 but have followed the issue in Excellence and the Pelican forums and understand that IMS failure is more common with cars that are rarely driven – from that standpoint a car driven an average 5K per year should be less likely to suffer the problem. That said, William’s experience shows this isn’t always the case. I can’t imagine buying an ’05 or earlier without having the preventive IMS repair maintenance done immediately after purchase – this essentially would add a few thousand to the purchase price right off the top.
