2006 Audi S4 Avant

A few weeks back during our “Wagon Week” theme, I wrote up Audi’s last stand in the Avant market; a steadily decreasingly number of offerings in the 2000s. I looked at three nice versions of the Avant that were available in 2008. My unfortunate conclusion, though, was that none of them would be the car that I would want. The S4 Avant was certainly tempting, but the automatic wasn’t the transmission I’d want in there. However, change a few details and suddenly that B7 becomes much more appealing. Add some great option BBS CH wheels and a manual transmission along with a caring owner, and the B7 S4 was a package that really had no rivals. It looked as fast as it went and remains on the best all-weather people haulers made:

Wagon Week: 2006 BMW 325ix Touring 6-speed manual

In many ways, I feel the BMW E91 Touring will be viewed as an end of an era. BMW is now being rather stubborn in their refusal to offer a 3er Touring with a manual transmission. The E91 also represents the versatile 3er before the range was broken up into the 3 and 4 series. Now if you want a 3 series with a rear hatch, you can opt for either the 3 series Touring or Gran Turismo, and that’s before you get to the brand new 4 series Gran Turismo. This seems to be splitting the product portfolio quite thin, if you ask me.

Back in August, we had a 2007 328xi 6-speed manual Touring and we here at GCFSB were able to connect the seller with an enthusiast who bought it in short order. 2006 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG Estate

As car enthusiasts, many of us have found ourselves complaining that we can’t have exactly what we want. But sometimes, as the Rolling Stones would say, “you get what you need.” Such is the case with the AMG tuned E-class estates that Mercedes-Benz has offered for about the last decade or so. Your ordinary customer wasn’t going to waltz into the Mercedes showroom and purchase a 469 horsepower five-door monster, but for the family man having issues giving up his sports car, it was the perfect compromise. This 2006 E55 AMG Estate was brought to our attention by our reader Ry and is on offer in Texas at a rather attractive price.

Motorsports Monday: 2006 Porsche 911 Carrera Koni Challenge

Looking for a budget track ride? There are plenty of options out there for you, but in terms of sheer performance for value the Porsche 911 in 996/997 guise is still quite hard to beat. Especially when talking about the 997, the refinement Porsche had managed to build into the chassis is simply remarkable; 911s have a reputation as widow-makers, but the reality is that the 996 and 997 are very well balanced, easy to drive fast cars. They’re also long-lived when properly maintained and offer a driving experience that few sports cars match. They’re just good cars for the track – and quite fast. But are you really going to drop $90,000 plus modifications to alter a brand new 991 to be a track car? Not likely – a much better bet would be to check out some used examples, such as this perfectly liveried 997 from the 2006 Koni Challenge:

Fantastic Phaetons – 2004 and 2006 Volkswagen Phateon W12s

The Volkswagen Phaeton has been, since introduction, quite an intriguing car. Generally passed off by those out of the know as a rebadged A8, every time I see one I’m blown away that Volkswagen pulled the project off. Despite what the American enthusiasts think, the exclusive executive sedan has been very popular in Europe and specifically Germany – where it’s much more in vogue to fly a little lower on the radar. Fly low the Phaeteon does; for many, at first glance it doesn’t look much different than the B5.5 Passat, and many of the styling cues were incorporated into the B6 Passat sedan. Couple that with a general resemblance to the D2 Audi A8, and not many notice this serene Volkswagen shuttling its passengers in near silence. I say near silence, since the only noise you hear inside is the slightly slower beating of your heart and heavy breaths as you soak in the luxury. They’re disturbingly quiet inside, thanks in no small part to extra thick glass and soundproofing. Every conceivable option available in the Volkswagen catalog was thrown at these cars, including the top-spec W12 motor. Shared with the Audi A8, Bentley Continental GT and Flying Spur, the W12 is a monster of power – easily capable of propelling the very important people riding along with you quite close to 200 m.p.h. when deregulated. This is especially shocking given the Phaeteon’s weight – a staggering 500 lbs heavier than the Audi A8 you’d presume was the same car, the Volkswagen was simply in another weight class and quite different than the D2/3 chassis. Yet, despite the exotic Bentley stablemates that share many components and the D1 platform, today you can pick up one of these expensive cars that were a bit of a sales flop at a substantial discount:
