Double Take: 2007 Porsche 911 GT3 RS – How Do You Like Your Orange?

I am going to turn my attention now to a personal favorite: the 997 GT3 RS. These are the models that followed in the footsteps of the hallowed Carrera RS and they’ve continued a tradition since the 964 of keeping the RS moniker alive with each new 911 model. It also appears that the 997 will be the last GT3 RS to come equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission rather than PDK. There were a few different variants produced for the 997 with ever-increasing displacements that culminated with the 500 hp 4.0 liter flat-six of the RS 4.0. The examples we will look at come from the first generation, featuring a 415 hp 3.6 liter flat-six delivering power to the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission. The GT3 RS has become the ultimate expression of track-focused aggression within the 911 portfolio and as such they can be equipped with a wide-variety of performance options from the Porsche parts bin, including a roll cage where a standard 911 would have its rear seats. Neither of the two we’re going to look at here has been pushed to that end of the spectrum, but even in standard form any RS is an extremely capable machine that will run with most of the best cars produced today. The focus here is Orange, but rather than go with the full-orange GT3 RS we are going to look at two different versions making use of Orange as the accent color for the wheels and other trim. Track cars, whether they are used as such or not, by their nature are meant to stand out and show wonderfully in bright accent colors. We will start with this Black over Orange example, located in South Carolina, with just under 10K miles on the clock:

Motorsports Monday: 2007 Porsche Cayman

I really like the concept of the Cayman. Mid-engined, manual gearbox, rear drive and a lighter chassis are a return to the roots of Porsche – the Auto Union Grand Prix cars first designed by Ferdinand Porsche in the 1930s. Dynamically, it’s hard to fault the Cayman, too – on track, they’re simply magnificent, dispatching corners and straightaways with ease, rippling pavement in braking zones. I was lucky enough to spend some time on track in a then-new ’09 fully loaded S; it immediately put you at ease, the capabilities of the chassis left plenty in reserve even when you entered corners at seemingly inappropriate or inadvisable speeds. Fit and finish-wise, they’re a Porsche through and through; beautiful paint, striking wheels, and luxurious interiors. The soundtrack is pretty great, too. One area that I’m not convinced? The looks; some look great, while others look slightly out of proportion to me. One great upgrade that you can do that really makes the Cayman look more purposeful, though, it to equip the front end with big-brother 911 GT3 items. The result is much more aggressive, and paired with some racing graphics, a huge rear spoiler and the right bits inside, you’ve got yourself a budget Cup car:

2007 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Estate

$_4 (1)

I give a lot of credit to Mercedes-Benz for sticking it out with one conspicuous model in their lineup: the E-class AMG estate. “Sport” is an understatement with this vehicle, given the amount of power lurking under the hood. For three generations, Mercedes-Benz has offered an AMG-infused estate, with US customers gaining access over the last two generations. While AMG has lent its name on the tailgate of many of their SUVs, this fast five-door has the mettle to back up the aggressive stance. With a lower center of gravity and a lusty, naturally aspirated V8 under the hood, entertainment will ensue for the serious driver. This 2007 E63 AMG estate for sale in California has just over 62,000 miles and should give the kids a bit of a laugh if you decide to hoon a bit.

2007 Porsche Cayman S

I don’t like to make assumptions, especially within the automotive community as doing so is often met skepticism as to your intelligence and overall ability to function as a human being. That being said, I’m going to make two assumptions right now.

One: You were online yesterday and saw the new Porsche Cayman GT4 which you instantly fell in love with.

Two: You cannot afford the Porsche Cayman GT4.

I think these are fair assumptions to make because I’m a German Cars For Sale Blog reader and so are you. I’d love to have the fully clapped out brand new Cayman but given that I’m an automotive blogger, that’s just not in the cards. The first gen Cayman S on the other hand is well within the reach of many an automotive enthusaist and not just the high mileage beater ones either. Many a nicely equipped Cayman S can be found with around 50-80k miles on the clock for a reasonable price. For example, this one down in Dallas, TX has all the options you need and none that you don’t.

Motorsport Monday: 2007 BMW M Coupe

The E86 Z4 was a fairly radical departure from the E36/8 that it replaced. In many ways, the Z3 was born out of a series of spare parts and in some ways almost seemed an afterthought. It wasn’t as innovated as the Z1 and while the original M Coupe has become a fan favorite, the Z3 just overall seemed the odd-man out in the BMW lineup. On top of that, the design just overall hasn’t aged particularly well in my mind. But in 2002, the redesigned Anders Warming penned E85 Z4 roadster launched. It was bigger in every dimension, with cutting edge new styling that managed to incorporate both round and angular designs into one fluid package that somehow worked well. Over a decade on, it still looks quite new to me – one of the best tests of the staying power of a design. Also one of the best tests is that it was somewhat controversial at the time, but by 2006 and the launch of the M models most critics were convinced that it was a nice package. The addition of the stellar S54 powertrain certainly didn’t hurt, and with just 1,800 examples of the new Coupe design in the U.S., it was guaranteed classic status. But that hasn’t stopped some from converting the coveted Coupes into race cars, such as this Fall-Line Motorsports built wide body:
