2013 Audi TT RS

There aren’t too many cars that I look at today and think that down the road they’ll be viable used cars. I can look back at the previous tech-heavy generation cars for the trends of what will occur – take the BMW E31 for example. Sure, it’s a really neat looking car, and the lure of the V12 is made even more appealing since you could get a manual transmission. But then there are the horror stories of the 15 or more computers that it takes to run all of the electronic systems, and I wonder how people will keep them running in the future. That’s even more compounded when you look at newer models. For example, about a month ago I took a trip out to Coventry Motorcar and drove their modified CL65 AMG. It was when new, and still is today, an amazing car with every sort of electronic gizmo possible, from heated, cooled and massaging seats to the twin-turbo V12 under the hood. It’s as if Mercedes-Benz took a Brookstone catalog and attached it to a Saturn V rocket. But can you imagine maintaining that car as it creeps towards 120,000 miles? I certainly can’t, and it’s a feeling I have about nearly all new luxury German cars.

There are a few exceptions, even in my favorite brand of Audi. While I’m not a fan of most of the models they’ve come out with recently in general, there are a few special ones that I’d consider owning down the road. It’s not that I don’t like or admire the cars; the performance of the new generation motors is stunning and the interiors and exteriors are, I think, the best in the business. It’s that I just can’t contemplate how you’d keep a new S8 running down the road. Having owned cutting edge, tech heavy Audis in the past, it’s a recipe that I would be concerned with in the future. I might make an exception, though, for a car like the this:

2013 Mercedes-Benz SLK250

Few may have noticed it, but for 2016, the manual transmission is no more for Mercedes-Benz customers in the US. The last car to come so equipped is the one we see here, the SLK250. While I’ve never driven an R172 SLK, they have always intrigued me. For a current Mercedes model, the styling is rather tidy and conservative. I don’t see too many of these on the street, either, which makes them attractive for someone like me who doesn’t want to be seen in what everyone else is driving. I’ve experienced the same 1.8 liter turbocharged four-cylinder in the last generation C250 sedan and came away rather impressed, even if there was a bit more turbo lag noticeable than we are used to with modern engines these days. This SLK250 is one of those equipped with a 6-speed manual, finding its way somehow to a Nissan dealer’s used inventory in North Carolina.

Tuner Tuesday: Unusual Brabus-off

Is there such a thing as a “normal” Brabus? Perhaps not, but when Mercedes-Benz launched their Smart city car, I laughed out loud when I first saw the model with Brabus embossed wheels. The thing was, it was sort of cool, in that odd, semi-uncomfortable way. I was in Europe when these cars were first launched, and the site was stunning – a bit like rolling phone booths, they scampered about the streets of Stuttgart and seemed to genuinely be different than anything else available. But since the Brabus-kitted models launched, I’ve wanted to write one up as a bit of a joke, so when an extreme modified one popped up it seemed like the perfect opportunity. On the other end of the spectrum, the GL series is the largest Benz available, and of course in order to satisfy the Kardashians and other non-nonsensical families floating around imaginary-land they’ve made a Brabus edition. What better comparison than the smallest and largest Brabus you can buy?

“Beginning and End” Drop Top Double Take – BMW M3 Duo

Could the M3 market get hotter? I bet it can, because there are a massive amount of enthusiasts who follow and lust after the cars, this author included. But in my general searches for cars this week popped up one of the more strange ads that I’ve seen in some time; it was an advertisement celebrating the beginning and end of M3 production, but in convertible form. And it was for not one, but two M3s – an E30 and a E93. Now, frankly right now it doesn’t really matter what type of E30 you come up with, there’s someone who wants it. But the convertibles, though more limited production than the coupes, are a bit of a different market. In short, they’re desirable, but for a different reason than the motorsport heritage that started the M brand. 2013 saw the death of what we associated with M3; a naturally aspirated 2-door overachiever that in many ways defined the market for small performance sedans. Is this listing a fitting tribute to the legend or just an attempt to capitalize on M3-mania?

Green with Envy: 2013 BMW M3 Individual Java Green

When you have effectively the exact same car as many thousands of other enthusiasts, it’s hard to stand out. Countless Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Volkswagen enthusiasts try their best to personalize cars, but the reality is that even when you select numerous individual details your car is still one of many that are probably pretty similar. One solution is to buy a car that’s fairly obscure and modify it to your liking; but you’ll struggle to have a car that’s like new and probably won’t function well as a daily driver. If you want something new, reliable and with a warranty, your options are limited – that is, of course, until you select some of the special options offered by Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and BMW. All will paint your brand new car either one of their options outside of the normal color pallet for an additional fee; for a lot extra, they’ll even paint it any shade you can find anywhere. It’s an expensive option – but if I were thinking long term, it’s one I’d probably select. Chose wisely, and you’ll end up with a stunning package – one like this Java Green 2013 M3 Individual:

BlueMWs – A Roundup of Newer BMWs

If I’m brutally honest, I’m not a huge fan of most of the newer BMW designs. As my wife says, I’d be happy if Journey was still on the radio and everyone was walking around with a mullet (that’s only half true…). But that’s not it; as I was saying to her just yesterday, I just don’t get excited about most of the new designs that come out. It wasn’t always this way – I remember eagerly awaiting the next issue of the multiple car magazines I subscribed to so that I could immediately flip to the section I found most exciting – the upcoming cars feature. But that enthusiasm has waned as cars have grown more complex, isolating and expensive. Sure, they’re faster – and even basic models do everything much better than even some “supercars” from the 1980s. But I don’t look at them and get excited like I did when the S4 first launched, for example. But, a thought occurred to me – while I’m not the biggest fan of these cars, proportionate to what you used to receive they’re simply a better value and better cars. We can pontificate about the virtues of the E30 M3 to no end, but the reality is that even around a track, the bone-stock 328i all-wheel drive wagon below would give it a run for its money without much difficulty – and in every other aspect, it’s a better car. We’re really still in the midst of a horsepower revolution, but that power is translated to the ground better than before with more sophisticated transmissions and computer aids along with all-wheel drive available in most packages. But it’s not just speed – not only can these fast cars get you to the Alps, they are like the luxury resorts when you get there, with fine materials and fit and finish that are really top quality. In a word, they’re spectacular at being cars that are much more functional in multiple facets than anything previously. So, here’s a lineup of some neat newer BMWs; while I’m not the biggest fan of all the packages or designs, one thing that I do love is their blues – so here’s a round up of most of them:

2013 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Estate

The Wall Street Journal ran a piece last Friday covering the new E63 AMG S Series Estate. More than one friend messaged me over the weekend asking if I read about this new fast five-door. I informed them, however, that a fast estate car is nothing new for Mercedes-Benz. This just happens to be the first one to employ an all-wheel drive system. Still, my remarks were met with confusion, as those who read the article viewed such an estate vehicle as impractical or unattractive. To each their own, but for those jaded by the glut of SUVs on US roads, a V8 monster like this 2013 E63 AMG Estate is just what the doctor ordered.

2013 Audi allroad

As an Audi enthusaist and a wagon lover, it’s no surprise that I was excited when Audi of America announced the return of the allroad. Like many others I was hesitant to see that it was being released on the A4 platform rather than the larger A6 platform of the previous generation, but once I saw it, all reservations went out the window. Seeing the allroad was love at first sight. The stance, the flares, the grille, and the lines make this one of the most beautiful estate cars on the market.

Audi did it right this time. Anyone familiar with the original allroad knows that they were riddled with problems between the 2.7T and the air suspension. The new allroads save all of the fancy technology for where it counts….the cockpit. The allroad uses the same 2.0l turbo four as the rest of the A4 family coupled to the silky smooth 8-speed tiptronic gearbox, and of course Quattro AWD.

Where the allroad differs from your standard A4 Avant is in the styling with stainless steel front and rear skid plates and offroad inspired fender flares. To complete the offroad capable look, the allroad has a full 7 inches of ground clearance. This car can certainly walk the walk if the owner was so inclined.

Theme Week: 2013 Alpina B7 XDrive for sale

I see a lot of executive saloons around here and wonder about the decision making process leading up to such a purchase. Why, exactly, did that grandma want the S600? Was it simply that it was the most expensive, or does she secretly love twin-turbo V12s? Does the S65 really make that guy feel bigger than the guy in the S63? These are questions that may never be answered, but I do know that the guy in the Alpina B7 was more than happy to talk to me about it at several stoplights. He had recently taken it to Dinan’s headquarters just south of here, and after some Dinan love they went for an ill-advised 180-mph blast in 25mph zone. If I were a 1-percenter looking for the ultimate big sedan, Alpina is where I’d look too. They combine the right amount of styling improvements and curb-stomping power to differentiate without losing class.

The Frozen Blue and ski-bag options set a theme backed up by the BMW’s XDrive, an interesting choice to help wrangle the 540hp and 538lb-ft.
