Coming in the second-to-last year of classic 911 production this Cabriolet will show the peak refinement these cars achieved including possessing the highly-desirable G50 transmission (a fact this seller seems almost too aware of given how often it is mentioned in the ad).

1989 Porsche 911 Speedster

I tend to go back and forth about whether I prefer the look of the 3.2 Carrera Speedster or that of the 964-based Carrera 2 Speedster, but there is something about the particular car featured here that really catches my eye in ways that others have not. Either Speedster is, of course, intended to harken back to the original 356 Speedster and to a degree the narrow-bodied Carrera 2 seems to come closer to the mark in that regard. There were a small number of narrow-bodied 3.2 Carrera Speedsters made, but they are so few that I can’t recall coming across one. Getting to the car here, as the market for the 3.2 Carrera has intensified I’ve been curious about the effect that would have on the rare variants of these models. The Speedster has always been very expensive so we may wonder how much more value they may show in the near term, but if this seller can even approach this asking price, then it would appear that the Speedster market has increased quite a bit as well. Here we have a gorgeous Grand Prix White 1989 Porsche 911 Speedster with red leather interior, located in Monterey, showing 22,300 miles.

1986 Porsche 911 Carrera

In 1987 Porsche introduced a new transmission for the 911 to replace the outgoing 915 5-speed that had been in use for the previous 15 years. The G50 5-speed was a welcome introduction providing increased durability and improved shifting and has consistently been a strong selling point for the later 3.2 Carrera models. This change has also had the effect of slightly suppressing the value of the earlier models, making a 1986 3.2 Carrera an interesting proposition for those in search of driver-quality cars and don’t mind the slightly lesser transmission. The 911 featured here fits into that sphere of driver-quality ’86 Carreras. This Guards Red Coupe, located in Miami, with 137,750 miles should be obtainable at a reasonable discount relative to many other examples we see on the current market.

1989 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet

A cabriolet parked next to the ocean. If you were trying to sell a Baltic Blue 911 Cabriolet, you could certainly come up with a worse place to photograph it. Idyllic settings are what make open-top motoring so appealing. With the top down even a hot summer day feels a lot cooler as you watch the scenery rush by and enjoy the ocean air. This Baltic Blue 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet, located in Tampa, Florida, comes in with 63,621 miles. While the 3.2 Carrera is no longer the bargain it once was, many of the examples outside of the rare 20K-mileage-and-less range have yet to appreciate to quite the same degree. However, those days are surely numbered so anyone who had hopes of owning one of the last classic 911s will need to act soon.

1986 Porsche 911 Carrera – M491

To provide some satisfaction to its customers who hoped to own a 911 Turbo during the years when the Turbo was not for sale on the US market, Porsche offered the M491 package. Sometimes called the “Turbo-look” 911 these cars were essentially a 930 minus the forced induction. While that’s no small difference, it did mean that prospective buyers had the option of buying a standard 3.2 Carrera with the upgraded braking and suspension of the Turbo, along with its wider rear and tea-tray spoiler. Derided by some, over time the M491-package 911 has become a hot commodity amongst many enthusiasts for its greater dynamic capabilities, paired with the lowered maintenance concerns and running costs of the naturally aspirated engine. The example here is a modified M491-packaged 1986 Porsche 911 Carrera that perhaps has hoped to make up some of the performance differences brought on by the lack of the 930’s engine.

Value buys for a 3.2 Carrera are becoming harder and harder to come by and for those who have long harbored a desire to get into one of these cars for the first time certain compromises may need to be made. The 3.2 Carrera was produced from 1984-1989 and as a general rule earlier is better for those looking to save some money. There is typically a distinct difference between prices for the last three years of production versus the first three years as it was 1987 that the G50 5-speed transmission was first utilized in these cars. That said, there are still plenty of good cars available and if they are mechanically sound at purchase, then they can easily provide many years of additional driving pleasure. Such should be the case with this 97K mile 1985 Porsche 911 Carrera, located in Pennsylvania, which comes in the unique combination of blue on blue.

1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa

As the air-cooled 911 market has accelerated it has been nice to see some of the nicer driver-quality cars come up for auction and the example here fits that description quite well. Here we another car in Guards Red, though this time a 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa located in Atlanta. The mileage isn’t too high at 111,500 and this one stands apart from the rest with some very sexy HRE deep dish wheels and custom seat inserts that I’m sure will be a very love/hate addition to this car. Needless to say this is not a Targa that will be prized by collectors, but that means it should be obtainable for a better value. With an engine that should have plenty of life left in it that’s the sort of driver-quality Carrera that we’re looking for!

1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet

There is something to be said for a great interior in any car, but especially in a convertible. With the top down and the sun shining every little detail tends to stand out not only for the world to see but even for you as the driver. The interior is what we see and feel and it is what connects us to the car and provides immediate sensory feedback. A terrible interior can make a great car seem boring, and a great interior livens up even pedestrian models. Thus, it should come as little surprise that I really love the interior on this 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet. Other than the steering wheel, I have always loved the layout and look of the classic 911 interior and when presented in this shade of Tobacco leather I find that everything fits together perfectly, especially on a car in a shade of dark blue like the Marina Blue we see here. The contrast works to make the car seem more alive and driving more enjoyable. As we continue our slog through the variants of the 3.2 Carrera, this Cabriolet with 106K miles provides us another look at this escalating market and the current demand for driver-quality examples.

1986 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa

We have featured a few 3.2 Carreras for sale lately as the market for these cars rises and owners look to capitalize on interest in the car. Here we have another example that will provide us with an interesting look at where Carreras in various states of condition and mileage are selling. Given some of the sales we’ve seen, this particular Carrera might even be a pretty good value. This Guards Red 1986 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa, for sale in California, comes in the rare combination of red on red and sits at just shy of 80K miles. We’ve seen in the past few weeks this 1989 Carrera Coupe with 57K miles sell for $45,000 and this 1986 Carrera Coupe with 162K miles recently sold for $27,000. So, where might Targa values lie relative to these coupes?

1988 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa

We see a pattern like this from time to time: the market for a particular car heats us and then every owner (or so it seems) of a well-maintained example throws their car up for auction to capitalize on said market. The basic idea makes a lot of sense, especially for someone who may have been holding onto a car for a decent chunk of time. With the 911 we’ve seen this happen a few times with particular rare variants, but right now it appears that any low-mileage 3.2 Carrera is the hot car to have. We featured a low-mileage 1987 Carrera Coupe a few days back that sold almost instantly and here we have another low-mileage Carrera, though rather than a Coupe this one is a Targa. Here is a Guards Red 1988 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa, located in Alabama, with a light gray (perhaps Linen?) interior and a mere 34,400 miles on the clock.
