This is my second potentially “market setting” 3.2 Carrera and this one, as should be immediately clear from the specifics of the car and the asking price, epitomizes that term. Here we have a Venetian Blue Metallic 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe with a special order light grey interior and a mere 8,900 miles on it. And all of this loveliness could be yours for just $157,500. How did we get here? I’m not really sure and I have no idea where we go from here (though I’d be shocked if things went up). The car itself: it’s a nice combination and the condition looks good, though this is a color that is done a disservice being photographed indoors. It needs to be in the sunlight where that Venetian Blue exterior can show off its vibrancy and where the lightness of the interior makes a lot more sense. It is otherwise a fairly standard 3.2 Carrera that I presume has spent its life in a garage. Like in most such cases that is too bad as this 911 hasn’t been truly enjoyed, but we are used to such things around here. My curiosity is piqued by the asking price and along with yesterday’s Targa these aren’t entirely outliers. I’ve seen others with very high price tags and at least this one, though it is by far the highest price tag I have seen, has a collection of attributes that combined can warrant a significant premium. Something is going on with the market for these Carreras and we need to see where it settles.

1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa

The next couple of days I have two 911s that we might best classify as potentially market setting. While the market for non-turbocharged air-cooled 911s has gradually been increasing over the past year or so, some of the asking prices I am seeing recently signal a precipitous rise. Yet, I cannot recall actually seeing any recent huge sales to suggest that these prices are in line with the market. Perhaps these cars are well ahead of the market, or perhaps they are a harbinger of things to come, but I hope to keep my eye on them and get a sense of where we are. The first of the two is this very low mileage Platinum Metallic 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa with Light Tan interior located in New York. As this is a reserve auction it should at least give us a shot to see where bidding will take this price and at its current bid of $56,999 (though this is a single bid) it is already commanding pretty strong value for an ’84 Carrera Targa. How much higher might it go?

1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe

Maybe green is becoming more popular than I realize because suddenly there appear to be quite a few green 911s coming up for sale from a wide variety of models. A few weeks back we had a run of interesting blue cars and now we’ve moved on to green. Who knows what color will be next! So, to this car: here we have a Moss Green Metallic 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe, located in Atlanta, with tan interior and 48,655 miles on it. Note that this is a European model so the model designation listed on eBay is slightly off. It is not a 1980 911. As with many green cars, and as the name of this shade makes quite clear, this 911 possesses a strong sense of nature and earthiness that fits well in many environments. It makes for an interesting color, but one that doesn’t necessarily stand out. It blends well. As the first year of the 3.2 Carrera an ’84 model tends to make for a good option as you get the basic engine upgrades that many desire over the 911SC, but without the premium associated with the later G50-equipped models. The example here has low enough mileage that it won’t come across as a value buy, but it should please collectors and it’s not such low mileage that it can’t be driven at all. As a weekend cruiser with some upside it sits in a pretty solid place (even if I do think it’s being priced too high).

With blue 911s being the theme of the past week, why not revisit this beautiful Baltic Blue 1989 Porsche 911 Speedster. The asking price remains unchanged, though it has now popped up on eBay presumably to help attract a larger audience. We are also treated to a few extra pictures of what is one of the best looking Speedsters I have seen. Values have been on the rise so we’ll have to see if this one can find itself a new home.

Frankenstein 1972 Porsche 911E Targa/911SC/3.2 Carrera

As the title of this post should make clear we’re going to need to ask a lot of questions about this Porsche 911. In general, its appeal will be limited as almost any car of this sort will be. It’s not original, nor will it ever have any collector value, and our most pressing question will remain, “Why?” That aside I do think there is some appeal here and for the right price this could make for a pretty fun 911 that melds a variety of classic models into what hopefully is a coherent whole. Let’s start with what we have here: this 911 began as a 1972 Porsche 911E Targa, which, for reasons that are unclear, was rebodied as a 1978 911SC. The current owner does not why, but seems quite confident this change was not due to an accident or any other nefarious conditions. Maybe whomever owned it at the time preferred the redesigned look, we don’t know. Added to this new body was the engine and transmission from a 1986 3.2 Carrera. So that’s our frankenstein 911 we see here. It has the lightness of the long-hood 911, wrapped in the skin of the impact-bumper-equipped 911SC, all surrounding the more modern heart of the 3.2 Carrera. In total, given the aesthetic similarities between the 911SC and 3.2 Carrera, what we end up with is basically a lightened 3.2 Carrera, and if everything is properly sorted that in itself is not a bad proposition at all!
