1986 Mercedes-Benz 300SL 5-speed manual

The R107 SL had one of the longest lifespans of any model in Mercedes-Benz history. From 1972 to the dawn of the 1990s, this two-seat roadster represented the style, performance and durability that were hallmarks of the Three Pointed Star. Curiously, Mercedes decided the V8 versions were enough variety for the US consumer, leaving the six cylinder models, some with manual gearboxes, to other markets. This low mileage 1986 300SL for sale in is now eligible for importation to the US under the 25 year guideline. Signal red over black leather is a classic combination for these cars. The 5-speed manual coupled to the 3.0 liter inline-6 makes for an involving experience. Look a little closer and there is one option that had me ogling over this car. The very rare on-board computer. I have never before seen this option fitted to an SL.

Dream-wing: 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing

It’s been nearly a year since Paul wrote up a beautiful 300SL Roadster, but that isn’t because these rare Mercedes-Benz supercars aren’t of interest to us. The reality is they remain dreams to all but the most well-heeled of well-heeled individuals, and in recent years that’s become even more true for the most desirable of the lot, the Gullwing Coupe. When I was young, it was rare to see these cars but they turned up at vintage events, raced in hill-climbs and occasionally even on track. But that was back in the days when a good SL would set you back around $150,000 – $200,000. A lot of money for sure, but compared to these days it wasn’t even the amount of a restoration on one. Over the past year, prices on these iconic cars have more than doubled with no end in sight; now, a top condition one car will set you back approximately 1.8 million dollars – exactly the asking amount of this particular example:

Party Like It’s 1989 Week: ’89 Mercedes-Benz 300SL 5-speed

The day has finally arrived. It is now the year where R107s of all kinds are legal for entry into the US, no matter where they came from. For me, this has my eyes set squarely on one very specific model: the 1989 300SL with the 5-speed manual gearbox. The final years of the R107 SL saw but one model in the US market, the 560SL with the 5.6 liter V8 engine. Those that have driven them know these are competent cruisers but aren’t the most all out sporting of machines. For 1986, Mercedes revived a storied name when it dropped the M103 inline-6 under the hood: 300SL. For those not in need of the power (or fuel economy) of a V8, this was an attractive option and was offered with another feature not available on US-bound R107s: a 5-speed manual gearbox.

As a preview to our week of celebrating 1989 vehicles eligible for importation stateside, here is a very low mileage 1989 300SL for sale just south of Cologne, Germany that is equipped with a 5-speed manual. It also has a few other options like heated front seats and the rear Kinder seat that you don’t normally see on the US market 560SL model.
