1969 Mercedes-Benz Unimog 404


We’ve seen some differing takes on the Unimog recently, including a more modern 90s example and a nice change of color on a white 416. Those were cool, but today’s rings truest to the original inspiration of my Mog love, owned by my childhood best friend’s dad (also owner of an Estoril E36 M3 sedan and a strong collection of Ducatis). When it comes to affordability, even restored versions of the barebones original 404 are way up there when it comes to cool, weird, classic 4x4s. For less money than a brand-new, 2WD, no-option pickup, you could scare every other car off the road. These are certainly a want and not a need, but their impracticality in everyday life (or at least my everyday life) is strongly countered by rather low prices.

1961 Mercedes-Benz Unimog


I’ve written up a few different types of Unimogs here, but this one is the closest to the one I’m most familiar with, the 1963 Mog owned by the same family that gave me my first taste of ///M in their Dinan E36 M3 Sedan. Nothing flashy here, no lights or fire brigade accessories. Just some drab green, some canvas, and a whole mogload of badass. It looks to be in outstanding shape for a 50+ year old offroader. Oh, you were looking at buying a $15k Dodge 4×4 truck? Try again dude, spend less than that and get a UNIMOG.

A true off road vehicle! This 1961 Unimog 404 has spent the majority of its life as a fishing vehicle, this shows in the condition and quality that it is in today. It is all original and never modified, do not buy one of these that has been modified and 4 wheeled but own the original classic that will take you anywhere! In addition to it’s 4 wheel drive capability this 404 has a 12,000 lb electric whinch that can be used in the most difficult of places.

The wood bed in the back is in excellent condition along with the canvas top covering the bed and cab (rare that it is still on, AND even more rare that it is in great shape). The MOG comes with the original windows, wheel chalk, service manual, road hazard, and jack!






We service these vehicles before we sell them to make sure that they are in excellent driving condition with no issues. We have had many 404’s and know them well, so do not buy from someone whom has never worked with one. Buy one that will be the most reliable vehicle you have ever had.


No, it may not exceed 40 mph, but it will take you anywhere and drop jaws every step of the way. I truly believe $14k is better spent on this than just another 4×4. Every lifted-Ford/Dodge/Chevy joker would blush and look away when you rolled up in this. If you need to be comfortable, buy a car. If you need to be badass, buy a Unimog.

Most megatrucks these days have a bit too much bling, so when I think about crushing commuter cars I’m all about the Unimog. The same friend’s dad that introduced me to the M3 also bought a Unimog of similar vintage to today’s example but did not have the whole military-radio set up in the back. I’m not sure what one would do with that setup these days other than have an awesome period military piece, but the great thing about Unimogs is their versatile modularity. Old Mogs will require some love but have a low cost of entry, so you could have plenty left over to make it whatever kind of monstertruck you want!

This truck is 51 years old, running, driving and very

It could use attention to the following items:
The tires are old and have cracks
The front canvas is also dry and some stitching is coming loose
Very minor oil moisture here and there
Front seat upholstery could use refreshment
One of the two gas tanks is disconnected because it needs to flushed before adding fresh gasoline.
The transmission has a vibration at speeds over 65 Km/h, but shifts
fine in all gears. It could probably use a bearing or a transmission
replacement. I can include a good used, tested transmission for
$ 1250. Installation available at an extra $ 3500,- ($ 4750,-)
Any Unimog 404 S which has not been used on a regular basis, should be towed instead of driving long distance on highways so please do not ask if this can be driven across the country right out of my yard.

The 404 S is the most-produced Unimog, with over 64,000 made over 35 years. The Unimog I rode in didn’t really go over 40mph, so I’m not sure how much the transmission vibration would actually bother you. Either way it sounds like the seller is a great source for all things Unimog and thus a pretty good person to know if you’re trying to have the toughest truck out there.


1962 Mercedes-Benz Unimog 404

With the Sprinter now being sold under the Mercedes-Benz badge in the US market, it has raised the profile of Mercedes-Benz and their commercial offerings in the US market. Over the years, Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles have run the gamut from buses to tractors, but one of the longest lasting commercial vehicles to wear the Three Pointed Star is the Unimog. With a high ground clearance, flexible frame and knobby tires, these were equipped to tackle almost any environment, from the desert to mountain passes. Not surprisingly, many were ordered for militaries the world over, such as this example for sale in California. This is a 404 model, which enjoyed the largest production cycle of any Unimog variant, and was available with a modified M180 six cylinder petrol engine, which produced 80 horsepower or could be had with higher compression heads to increase output.

Here is an all original 1962 Mercedes-Benz Unimog 404 Troop Carrier in very good condition. No rust of any kind, everything works on this vehicle, lights, gauges, heater, wiper motors. It has all original tool kit, jack, spare, gas tank, wheel chock, shovel, ax, grease gun and owners manuals. It originally was for the German Army, then it was surplussed to the Belgian Army in the early 1980s and refurbished and then the Belgian Army surplussed it. Then it came here to the States in the late 1990s where it lived in Arizona until 2012. Then I bought it to California. They didn’t get a lot of miles put on them. All the canvas is in excellent shape. This vehicle is like a billy goat, it can climb just about anything. It has two lower range gears for creeping and four higher range gears for cruising for a total of six forward gears and two reverse gears. This thing is a blast to drive and turns heads wherever it goes.

The patina on this Unimog is just right. The original tools are a nice touch, as these could have easily been lost over the years. These are the kind of cars that you don’t want to obtain in meticulous cosmetic shape, as you would want to be able to use this truck for what it was built for. And according to today’s social constructs, that would apparently include the school run and grocery shopping.
