Not a week goes by it seems that we don’t feature an E39 BMW 5 series of some sort. Generally we like to hone in on the V8 engined fast Fives, but the bread and butter E39s in the US market were the ones equipped with the inline-6 under the hood. This 2003 530i represents the last year for the E39 and the sunset on this particular chapter in BMW design language. Equipped with the sports package and a 5-speed manual gearbox, it is sort of junior version of the M5 for those who may be scared off by the running costs and thirst of the Motorsports beast.

Double Take: 1978 BMW 530i

I’d like to think that Paul Bracq winces a bit every time he sees one of his beautiful creations saddled with what the government deemed necessary to survive a 5 m.p.h. impact. It’s rather ironic, seeing as how today most cars can’t even rub up against another without deforming the plastic bumper covers. But back in the 1980s, the solution to the problem wasn’t aerodynamic, well integrated covers – no, as if to say “that’s not a real regulation, is it?” to the government, manufacturers went overboard. They adopted massive impact bumpers for U.S. markets, many extending improbably far from the body lines of the car. The E12 was a perfect example of this; of course, take a BMW from the 1970s, take the bumpers off and drive it at something and you’ll quickly learn what will hit first – the hood. The chiseled looks Bracq refined were great though, almost good enough to overlook the saddling of U.S. safety equipment. In many ways, I prefer the simplicity of the E12 to the refined E28; to me, the early car is prettier, a 5 series with some of the best parts of the 6 series design incorporated. But there were many drawbacks besides the look of the bumpers for E12s in the U.S. market. Most notably, the pre-catalyst engine used thermal reactors and air pumps to help superheat the exhaust to burn off pollutants – remember, these cars were delivered when leaded gasoline was still around, meaning catalytic converters would quickly be clogged. However, the thermal reactors wreaked their own havoc with the M30, sometimes resulting in warping the head. Coupled with diminished performance and a propensity to rust, it’s therefore become rare to find good condition E12s still floating around today – but there are two for sale on Ebay right now:

1976 BMW 530i with 53,000 Miles

It may sound crazy, but there was actually a point in time when items like “automatic” and “fuel injection” were enough of a headline grabber to mount badges to the outside of your car. It was a sign that you had arrived, that you were driving a luxury automobile. Yet take a look at this BMW; most of the accoutrements we’re used to seeing in the cars from Bavaria are notably absent. Automatic seats? Not likely here. Automatic mirrors? No, you’ll need to adjust before you leave – especially on a cool day. Speaking of those cool days, take a look at the doors – notice anything odd? How about manual crank windows! As an enthusiast and having owned older cars, I find these things particularly exciting, if for no other reason than there’s less to go wrong. Check out this excellent condition E12:

1994 BMW 530i 5-speed manual

The BMW E34 5 series is classic BMW. I think few models, barring the E30, embody everything this brand is about more so than this particular range. From the 525i Touring to the M5, there was a broad array of models that were on offer here in the US market to suit varying tastes. One interesting variant was the 530i, especially when equipped with the 5-speed manual gearbox. Nowadays we think of 3.0 designated the use of a six cylinder engine, but in the case of this E34, a small, 3.0 liter V8 was under the hood. This was the dawn of the modern V8 era for BMW and rarely could you find a V8 of such small capacity in a motorcar. Often looked over for it’s bigger brother, the 540i, this lesser variant is worth a second glance, especially when you come across a nice one like this which is for sale in New Jersey.

One of the best cars I have had the pleasure of owning. Truly a STOCK, UNMOLESTED example of a near perfect E34 5-Speed V8. I will give a very detailed and honest description so read on!

Before I go further, I would like to share a bit of my opinion about serviced and maintained high mileage cars. If you are looking at this ad, then you are in the market for a E34. When weighing your options about a low mileage higher priced car and one such as mine that has higher, cared for mileage, please consider this. This car has had EVERY required service, almost everything has been replaced/serviced and is all DOCUMENTED. Lower mileage cars have alot of expensive maintenance creeping up, alot of things that will soon go wrong that have not been repaired. Why not buy a car that has been literally revamped?

There are no mechanical issues with this car. I have service records for the last 14 years of ownership! Every oilchange has been documented, always Mobil One Syntetic Oil, always Premium 93 Octane fuel. Recent service includes new suspension, billsteins, control arms and trailing arms. Valve cover gasket, timing chain service, new hoses belts and fluid flushes. I cannot even begin to touch the surface of the kind of extensive service this car received. The previous owner was a BMW shop owner and no expense was spared in maintaining this sedan. The best tires for the car are on it, Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S and they have 80% threadwear left.

All electricals work, new window motors, regulators and clips. New seat motors and cables. Ice cold Dual AC system! Factory speakers replaced and the stock stereo sounds great! Heated seats on both sides work flawlessly. No missing pixels on the dash, no warning lights, no issues.

As you can see from the pics, the interior is like new, no ripped or torn Seats, armrests are near perfect, carpets are like new, no soggy headliner, everything is intact! I have not seen a nicer interior on this era E34 in a very long time. This car has had no accidents as you can see from the free Autocheck and is above average in their scoring system.

Mechanically 100%. I would not hesitate to drive this car cross country. You get a constant 23mpg on the highway, engine is sound and powerful, the manual transmission shifts smoothly. No funny noises oil leaks or suprises. Just a really well maintained Ultimate Driving Machine! Always passes NJ MV State Inspections.

In Alpinweiss over black, this is classic BMW all the way. A lot of maintenance has been attended to on this 530i, so it should put the mind at ease just a bit. This car certainly doesn’t appear to have over 150,000 on the clock. With the 5-speed manual, someone is sure to have a lot of fun with this motor for not a lot of change.

2002 BMW 530i

Ah the E39 5 series. The darling of Bimmerphiles everywhere who take issue with BMW’s new design language and propagation of electronic driving aides. This 5er was more an evolution than revolution, with softened edges that retained hallmarks from previous iterations of the mid-sized executive sedan. While many revere the M5 for its V8 brute force, I remember driving a friend’s 2003 525i 5-speed manual and being surprised at how well balanced and quick on its feet it felt for a sizable sedan. The lesser weight and different steering set up of the six-cylinder engine contributed greatly to the improved road feel.

This 530i for sale in Hawaii was brought to our attention via our reader John and short of the M5, is possibly one of the most desirable setups for a late model E39.

The one big drawback for most people would be this car’s location: Hawaii. Sure, it’s a great reason for a Pacific holiday but then comes the hassle and cost of shipping it back to the mainland. Around $7,000 to $9,000 is about where these clean E39s are hovering, so this one is on the pricier side of things, especially considering costs associated with interested parties not in Hawaii. But if you are one of the lucky ones living in that island paradise seeking one of the best sports sedans available with a manual transmission of recent memory, this 530i might be your ticket.

History and Documentation

This is a 1994 BMW 530i Touring. This 530iT was originally sold by McNulty BMW in Ohio. According to the prior owner, the car was ordered by Mr. McNulty for his wife. The car was supposedly a “summer car” in Ohio and was driven sparingly. The prior owner, an older couple, lived in San Diego and also drove the car sparingly. I am the 3rd registered owner. The car currently has a little over 82,000 miles on it. The title is free and clear in my name. For CA residents, the car is registered through 2014. Description

This is a very, very nice Touring in the desirable Alpine White with black interior color combo. If you are looking for an E34 wagon, you can look for a long time but you will be hard-pressed to find one this clean, this well-cared for, this documented, this low-mileage…and this cool. It has been “cloned” to look like an Euro E34 M5 wagon with the following modifications:

Condition/Exterior

The Touring has all its original paint, with exception of the rear M-Tech bumper and the front bumper from an Alpine White M5 of the same year. The sheet metal is dead straight. It does not have a single dent or ding on it anywhere. Not one. It is 100% rust free. The paint shines bright. It does not have any scratches or gouges. The clear coat is 100%. There is some slight “ghosting” on the tailgate where the original 530i emblem used to be.

All the trim is original and intact. Window trim is very nice. Rocker trim is very nice. Door handles are very nice. The Shadowline trim tape was professionally installed and looks great. The only small area of trim wear is the passenger side roof rail which shows some minor pitting. Original rear bumper has been replaced with an OEM BMW M5 bumper imported from Germany. It is excellent.

Front bumper is very nice with minimal wear and some chips on the lower lip. Front bumper trim on driver side has a small scrape (see photo). Original headlights and surrounds are very nice, very clean. Taillights are also very nice with no chips, cracks or fading. Glass is beautiful, with no pitting or scratches. The front windshield was replaced and is less than 1 year old. The tint is 3M and was done professionally. Original emblems are all intact but show some minor wear.

Wheels are recently refinished 17″ R.O.D M-Contour specific to the BMW E34. Fronts are 17×8.5″ and rears are 17×10″. Offset is specific to the E34, no spacers, adapters or anything else. Tires are Michelin Pilot Sport PS2s all around. Fronts are 245/40/17s, rears are 265/40/17s. (Original spare is in the trunk).

Condition/Interior

The interior of this Touring is as nice as the exterior. Front and rear seats are absolutely beautiful. When I bought the car it had sheepskin seat covers over both front seats that had been on the car since day one so the leather is in great shape. Seat heaters work and seats do not suffer from the common “seat-twist” problem. Dash is very nice and does not have any cracks, splits, tears or fading. Gauges are nice and clear. Original steering wheel is nice and is not cracked or heavily worn.

All knobs are original and intact. Glove box is intact and lock works. Original radio is very nice. Original door panels are very nice. They are not splitting or separating (though the driver side rear looks like it was nicely repaired at some point in time). Carpet is very good and is covered by brand-new, high-quality German rubber mats that I just purchased. All original seat belts are in the car and are very nice. Original headliner is very nice. It is super clean. It has one small sag around one of the rear speakers.

Rear cargo area is mint and looks like the it has never hauled anything. Rear seats fold down as they should to expand cargo area. Wood is good. A couple of pieces have minor cracks. I have custom refinished wood available with the Buy-It-Now option.

Condition/Mechanical

The Touring fires right up and runs strong. The 3.0L V8 runs smooth as silk and is a blast to drive. Performance is aided by a Dinan chip. Handling is aided by performance suspension/H&R springs. The automatic trans functions properly and runs through all the gears as it should. There is no slipping or hesitation. Shifts sharp and crisp. The car does not hesitate, smoke, leak rattle, or exhibit any unusual noises or behavior. It tracks and stops great.

All of the following work perfectly on the car

·A/C, heater and vents (the A/C blows ice cold!!)
·Headlights
·Taillights
·Instruments and gauges
·Signals
·Wipers
·Power steering
·etc., etc., etc.

To my knowledge, the only things of note that are not functioning 100% are –

* Driver side rear window is slow to roll up

* Driver door actuator is sticking

* Glovebox closes and locks but needs cables

* Radio needs to be reprogrammed

Even though the rest of the world had been enjoying the E30 3 series Touring for a few years, the E34 Touring was the first estate vehicle that BMW unleashed on the US market. Sales weren’t off the charts, but there was enough demand for the company to keep sending 3 and 5 series Tourings stateside for years to come. Considering the mileage and condition, I’d say this Touring is attractively priced, especially when you factor in the tasty M bits.

If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck…it must be a duck, right? Not necessarily. At first look, you’d see a clean M5, but then look closer and you see a clean 530i with the Dinan treatment. While the M5 is an all out performance sedan, this Dinan 5 is more of a gentleman’s sedan with a touch of sport.

On a lot of levels this car falls short of the M5, but on other levels, this car is just as good. The smooth and torquey V8 is a bit more civilized compared to the high strung six in the M5 and with the Dinan upgrades, the power gap becomes a lot less. Add in the smoother suspension and plush interior, and this car offers a great alternative to the increasingly pricey E34 M5. This beautifully maintained 530i for sale in Pleasanton, CA is a great daily sedan.

This BMW came to us, as do the majority of our cars, from one of our very good customers. We have been dealing with this customer / friend for years and he regularly arrives at our showroom in some very interesting German sports cars and sporting sedans. One day, he arrived in this great BMW indicating that he had purchased another “toy” and that something had to go ( and he didn’t want it to be his marriage!). We drove the BMW DINAN, fell in love and, as they say, the rest is history.

For over 2 years, the “Dinan 5” has been an occasional use car by our owner when 2 seaters and SUV’s are not being used. The BMW is a practical yet fun car to drive and represents a truly wonderful sporting sedan. This 530i is factory equipped with the strong 3.0 liter V8 that offers excellent performance in addition to very good fuel economy in part as a result of the cars manual 5-speed transmission. The BMW has had no major mechanical modifications and the DINAN upgrades have not negatively affected the BMW’s comfort for five, great handling, sporty 5-speed and even very good fuel economy! Perhaps the best part is that this generation E34 cars represent a tremendous value, especially if well maintained, low mileage cars can be located. This car is one such example.

With meticulously kept service records, relatively low miles and tasteful upgrades, this is a great car for someone looking to drive an older sedan. This car is selling in a reserve auction and I would expect that it sells in the $6,500 ballpark. That’s much less than an M5 of the same caliber, with just about the same looks.

2003 BMW 530i

I’m a sucker when it comes to a mint E39 5 series. After all these years, the E39’s successor, the E60, has never grown on me. The new F10 5 series isn’t bad, but when it comes to the right mix of old BMW style with new tech, the last of the E39s just can’t be beat. This silver 530i for sale in Florida splits the middle between the smaller engined 525i and the V8 540i and is a good choice for someone that wants a little bit more speed without the weight and consumption of the eight cylinder model.

Extra Clean only 65k miles! Selling my very well maintained 2003 530i with only 65,xxx miles! Asking $13,500. Located in Bonita Springs, FL. Car has been garaged in Florida it’s entire life. Car is being garaged now and is not being driven. Carfax is clean. Originally purchased it with only 33,084 miles on the clock in February of 2011. I have given it all the care and maintainence it required and then some. I have over 100 photos and paperwork documenting repairs, upgrades, etc. Both keys and valet key. New tires just put on the car at 63,xxx miles. Car needs nothing. No issues, no leaks, no codes. Interior and exterior are pristine. The mileage is relatively low on this car, but a lot has been racked up in the previous year and a half. The seller seems rather upfront and open to questions, so it would be worthwhile to look over the maintenance log before pulling the trigger. Looking over the pictures of this car, I can find little to fault. The headlights have not suffered the typical fogging up that is customary with these plastic pieces, the leather looks nice and tidy and all the body panels look straight. Of course, I’d rather this car be a 5-speed manual, but we can’t have it all sometimes. The asking price for this car isn’t way out of line and if the seller is open to a little bit of negotiation, this would be a decent deal for someone looking for an executive sedan on a budget.

2003 BMW 530i

The BMW E39 is a favorite of mine, along with a good number of our readers here at GCFSB. Whether it’s the sedan or Touring model, 525i or beastly M5, the entire lineup is appealing. We featured a 530i last week and here’s another one, but this one has the proper OEM wheels and looks a lot more tasty in black.

This is certainly a rare chance to get a nearly new E39 530i, but at almost $17,000, you are approaching M5 money. For some, the M5 might be just a little too much, but $14,000 or $15,000 is about as good as it gets for a clean 530i these days. I’d of course rather have the 5-speed manual, but I certainly wouldn’t pass up a mint condition E39 like this if I was in the market. Even though this car is not that old, I’d wager to say that 20 years on, the styling will still look fresh.
