1997 Porsche 911 Turbo S

I have spent much of this week focusing on the 993, a 911 that I don’t feature quite as often as many other models even though it has very wide appeal and in many cases significant collector interest. For the most part I have been trying to find examples that fit that collector objective most obviously and I will end the week with one of the more special variants produced: the 993 Turbo S. Like any 911 model with a ‘S’ appended to its name the 993 Turbo S was a more powerful version of the standard Turbo. However, unlike some other S variants it didn’t feature a more spartan interior, presumably because Porsche also was producing the 993 GT2 in order to satisfy those seeking both more power and also lighter weight. Other distinguishing features were the rear-fender vents (as we saw with the 964 3.6 Turbo S), redesigned rear wing, and yellow brake calipers in place of the Turbo’s standard red calipers. With only 182 produced for the 1997MY the Turbo S is definitely a rare car and the one we see here in the always captivating Speed Yellow with only 5,489 miles is likely one of the lowest mileage and, for me, best looking out there.

1996 Porsche 911 Turbo

Yesterday we saw a “Turbo-look” version of the 993 – the Carrera 4S – and today we will look at the full-bodied, full-blooded, twin-turbocharged 993. These cars possessed the performance to match their brawny exterior while also taking on new technologies. Borrowing some cues from their development of the 959, for the first time Porsche fitted twin turbochargers to the 911 Turbo and also a refined version of the all-wheel drive system that had debuted with the 964 Carrera 4. With power now exceeding 400 hp the 911 Turbo was capable of competing with the world’s best, but now came with more manageable dynamics and a power curve that was less prone to sudden bursts as the turbo came up to speed. While some enthusiasts may have yearned for the more hairy chested pre-AWD days, the 911 Turbo had long been a way for Porsche to combine the best of its performance and luxury and these refinements fit that bill perfectly. The 993 was the last of the air-cooled Turbos and for that they have always been beloved. Here we have an Arena Red 1996 Porsche 911 Turbo, for sale at Canepa, with only 9,352 miles on it.

2002 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe

As popular as they may be, silver cars are rarely exciting. Transform the shade, darkening it just slightly, from silver to one of the various grays on the market and suddenly you have something that can be far more interesting. We still wouldn’t call it exciting, but it becomes much easier to appreciate. Wrap that color around a 415 hp twin-turbocharged 911 and you have yourself a bit of a sleeper, or at least as close to a sleeper as an iconic sports car can be. The 996 may never be a much loved 911, but in turbocharged form it’s undeniably a fantastic performer and that lack of love simply means that they can be had for a much lower price than their comparable brethren. Here we have a 2002 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe, located in Oklahoma, with 51,000 miles on it.

1986 Porsche 930 Coupe

Last week we showed a car very similar to this one, which perhaps was not quite in the condition I would have hoped. I was curious about the low bidding and, as these things typically go, there may have been good reasons for that low bidding. So we’ll try again with another Guards Red 1986 Porsche 930 Coupe, this one located in Connecticut. Like the other car this one too features Tan leather seating, which is easily my favorite look on a Guards Red 911. The contrast is simply wonderful and I have a strong preference for these over the more common all-Black interior. With sports seats and only 44,583 miles on it there’s certainly a lot to like about this particular 930 and it presents very well both inside and out. Even though we feature them quite regularly I still enjoy coming across these and am consistently struck by the way the well-appointed interior tends to belie the aggressive stance of the exterior. There is a monster lurking here that provides ample rewards to focused drivers.

1994 Porsche 911 Turbo 3.6 X88 X99 package – 1 of 2

On to our second special 911 for the day. A few months ago we featured this 3.6 Turbo S ‘Package Car’ and I remarked in that post that my own personal Holy Grail would be the 1 Speed Yellow Turbo S produced for the US market. Well, this isn’t that car, but it is very similar and about as close as you can get without actually stumbling across the lone example to have been produced. Here we have a 1994 Porsche 911 Turbo 3.6, which crucially has been fitted with both the X88 engine option that came on the Turbo S and also the X99 option package with the Turbo S rear fender vents. Of the 51 reported Turbo 3.6 models also to have been fitted with the X88 engine only 3 possessed the additional X99 package, 2 of which were produced in Speed Yellow. This is one of those two. These differ in appearance from a true Package car by their lack of the Turbo S front and rear spoilers, but in all other regards they are identical and were the only way to get a non-flatnose Turbo S outside of the US market (excepting the Japanese market Slantnose).
