Have you ever looked at the McLaren F1’s centrally mounted seating position and thought to yourself, “Yes, this is what I need for my everyday commute”? Well have no fear because a solution has presented itself under the guise of this otherwise fairly basic 2010 Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet. The cliche is that a picture is worth a thousand words so I will leave it to the pictures to describe this Carrera’s transformation. I won’t lie, things get a little weird.
I’ve shown a lot of high-priced cars lately (this can be hard to avoid with 911s) so let’s get back to basics with this Marine Blue Metallic 1990 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Coupe with 84,463 miles on it. The Linen Grey interior provides stark contrast with the exterior and the overall combination reminds me a lot of color palettes more familiar on the 3.2 Carrera. Of course, with the ’90 MY we aren’t far from those Carreras at all so the relationship makes sense. Regardless of model it’s a very attractive combination that I’m sure will turn quite a few heads and the condition of this one looks very good.
There’s good and bad to monotone. On some cars it looks good and everything works together well, while on others a little more contrast is probably welcome. Wherever you might fall on the color contrast continuum, I will say that these monotone examples – other than the fairly popular triple black combination – typically rely upon rare and interesting colors and in that regard they are almost always worth investigating further. Generally these combinations aren’t purely monotone as there tends to be some contrast with either a slightly lighter or darker interior to help break things up just a little, but overall the colors are close enough. The example we have here falls squarely within this realm and I imagine the question of whether it works will be quite subjective. Here we have a Wimbledon Green Metallic 1992 Porsche 911 America Roadster, located in New Jersey, with a matching Wimbledon Green leather interior. Big tennis fan I guess?
I think I’ve been neglectful of the GT3, and that’s stupid. These are phenomenal cars. They are perhaps overshadowed by the more extreme GT3 RS and that’s probably the cause of my neglect, but really they shouldn’t be as their capabilities lie well beyond what most drivers can usefully exploit. And unlike the GT3 RS with all of its vents and wings the GT3 makes due with slightly more aggressive lines to separate itself from the rest of the 911 lineup. Well, when one popped up in Signal Yellow my attention was grabbed. Of the various yellows Porsche has produced, I feel confident Signal Yellow is my favorite. With Green, Blue, and Orange (really any of the jelly bean colors) I’m less certain and can sway toward one or another based on the model or just whatever has been capturing my focus at the time. But with yellow, it’s no contest. On a GT3 the color is brought to even greater heights as it marries its beauty with the superb performance of these modern 911s. Very little will grab your attention better than a long-hood 911 in Signal Yellow, but I dare say this GT3 does a pretty good job.
Update 12/1/19: It’s back! And now with a $$195,000 Buy It Now, it’s $90,000 cheaper!
Generally, I try to stay away from regurgitating material. However, once in a while a special car that makes me look back comes along, and today’s 911 Carrera RS Clubsport replica was certainly worthy of such devotion of time. The build was exhaustive and utilized factory parts throughout. The result? Stunning, to say the least! But, of course, since I originally wrote this car up nearly 3 years to the day ago, the air-cooled market has both soared, and for most models, gently cooled. The cars that remain at the top have been extraordinary examples such as the ultra-limited RS, turbo and truly special examples of the early and late air-cooled cars.
Where does a tribute car factor into this? Well, that’s tough to judge. That the car didn’t sell at its original $145,000 asking price is somewhat telling. However, three years on the car is now valued by the same seller at double the original asking price – now, $285,000. Before you punch your computer screen and throw insults vicariously through your keyboard, let’s put that into perspective. The last factory RS Clubsport we looked at stickered nearly $100,000 more than this car. Another, closer visually to the look of this car equipped with the spoilers and Speedline wheels, was asking nearly $300,000 more than this tribute. Still, it’s going to take just the right person who likes the looks but doesn’t care about the authenticity to stomach the mortgage payment for this ’95.
