1978 Porsche 911SC Targa

We will conclude what has become Targa month with an example that reaches back to the beginning of the 911SC model run and a car that reaches back to my own personal history with the 911. Here we have a Black on Black 1978 Porsche 911SC Targa, located in Pennsylvania, with 50,833 miles on it. My dad owned a 911 quite similar to this, differing only in that it was from 1979, and in many ways the aspects of the 911 Targa that appeal to me surely stem from many of those early experiences. I have begun to really enjoy the Targa in lighter shades as I’ve seen more of them, but a basic black on black model still ticks all the right boxes and, frankly, looks really nice. The 911SC wasn’t the first Targa produced, as they had been made available beginning in 1967, but during these early years of 911SC production the Targa was the only open-top option available. They were perhaps a peculiar design, but spoke to Porsche’s desire to meld performance with a driving experience that was both less confined while also meeting basic safety standards for roll-over protection.

1982 Porsche 911SC

For me the 911SC still sits squarely within the driver, rather than collector, market for 911s. That is not to suggest they cannot make for good investments, they surely can, but they still present some of the few examples that can be had at a reasonable value and they share enough similarities with the somewhat more desirable 3.2 Carrera to restrain their growth. But this is good news as it means hopeful buyers might still find a 911 in good mechanical condition from which they can get years of motoring enjoyment without too significant an expenditure. While a 911SC will never be a supercar by modern standards, with 180 hp (in US-spec) and less than 2700 pounds to move around there is still sufficient power to make any section of back roads a joy to drive, all the while possessing the analog feel of an ’80s performance car. Here we have a Silver over Black 1982 Porsche 911SC, located in New York, with 61,098 miles on it.

1979 Porsche 911SC Coupe

We don’t see many brown cars these days. That’s probably for good reason since they typically are not the prettiest things on the road, with most variants of brown made now usually coming in a shade akin to sand or desert or a variation thereof. But we almost certainly never see a car like this one: a Tobacco 1979 Porsche 911SC, located in Calgary, with Tan velour seats and 62,050 miles on it. My assumption is that the velour are seat covers rather than the originals because I’m not familiar with velour being a standard option for the 911, though I could certainly be mistaken on that. Regardless, almost everything about this 911 is period correct and looks in excellent shape. I wrote last week about the importance of the 3.2 Carrera and here, in this 911SC, we have the other candidate for the 911’s savior. This car comes from the 2nd year of 911SC production with a 3.0 liter flat-six producing 180 hp and delivering its power to the rear wheels via a 5-speed manual transmission.

1978 Porsche 911SC Coupe Restomod

There is something very sexy about a well executed 911 restomod. On one end of the spectrum we have the half-million-dollar works of art created by Singer, while on the other end we have examples developed by individuals that come through in various levels of quality and performance. In either guise the combination of modern performance and classic design has become a sought after marriage for those who prefer the unique styling cues found in vintage automobiles, but don’t want to compromise on performance. The example we see here strikes a nice balance that is neither over the top nor overly basic; it presents as a well-executed transformation providing a modest bump in performance along with a step back to the original design. This restomod began life as a 1978 Porsche 911SC that has received a carburated 3.2 liter flat-six sourced from an ’84 3.2 Carrera. The exterior was restored to the original long-hood 911 design while the interior has been thoughtfully put together to provide a vintage feel that complements the alterations to the exterior. With any design such as this you’ll want to spend some time talking to the builder to fully understand the car, but you can rest assured that you will rarely come across another example like it.

1982 Porsche 911SC

There are times when I forget that part of the success of the 911 comes not only through it’s excellent performance but also because it has almost always provided that performance with a high level of refinement. It is a hallmark of the marque itself, as evidenced by its forays into halo-car territory with the 959, Carrera GT, and the new 918 Spyder. None of these were stripped-out racers like the F40. This digression was sparked by the car we see here, an otherwise standard 911SC that happens to be in a stunning shade that showcases the refined nature of the 911. There are 911s that are brash, like yesterday’s 930 Slantnose, and then there are 911s that appear almost serene in comparison. Of course, the performance is still there, but it’s packaged entirely differently. Here we have a (possibly) Rosewood Metallic 1982 Porsche 911SC, located in Nashville, with 65,325 miles on it. It is, in a word, beautiful.
